No Essence or Training

I'm playing the demo of Geneforge on a Macintosh with OS X 10.4.5. It seems that I cannot increase my essence for my main character. If I use an Essence Pod is states I've gained 45 points, but my character never receives them. The character also does not recieve them with the town vats(? pools? tubs?) of essence, although the health vats(?) do work. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

 

Also in the training area I cannot get the doors to open. I have fed the guardian and he has said that he will open the doors for testing, but the doors still do not open. Another bug or am I doing something wrong?

If you have a creation, you cannot gain back the essence used to create it until the creation dies.
