G5 and A6 speed probs

i played the demo of Geneforge 5 and Avernum 6 and even at max graphics they both ran VERY smoothly, i registered them and they still worked fine, at first. i reopened G5 one day and the lag was intense, i could barely move the mouse, so i turned down all graphics, lowered my comps resolution, even closed my minimap and the game was tolerable at that point. it's been like this ever since except it occasionally goes back to being fast, but it always reverts to extreme slowness. A6 was the same, fast at first, then constantly slow. ive tried reinstalling the game and everything. i use windows vista with a HP pavilion dv6 laptop if it helps.

I had issues like this myself, with G5 at least, on the 8 yr old XP SP3 machine I use. Things I did:

 

Disk Cleanup

Defragment

Run Chkdsk at startup (Full with checking disk sectors)

Virus scan

Adware/Malware scan

 

Apparently this cleaned up a bunch of stuff that didn't get caught or slipped through cracks somewhere. G5 works fantastic now on the highest settings.
