If sci-fi wins this time, perhaps a thriller group will start up in a week or so. I don't really feel like a thriller, but again, I'm willing to compromise for the opener. In any case, I'm loathe to exercise too much control over the selections (like the trimming Slarty mentioned).

As to whether people have already read things... I'll leave it to the individual whether they want to re-read. Hopefully, the overall vote will reflect those preferences. I might also create an option to select one novel that would deter participation, then subtract the results of that poll from the main one.

The current list as I understand it, for reference:

    Something Wicked This Way Comes
    Nightfall
    Stranger in a Strange Land
    Into the Beautiful North
    Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
    Cloud Atlas
    Cat's Cradle
    1Q84
    Transfer of Power

Mind, while some of it is definitely a lack of upper-body strength (and a non-lack of upper-body weight), the other half is that I have ridiculous difficulty actually maintaining good form; my abdominal muscles always want to take over, which means I get going only to realize its my abs doing half the work. Even when I was in shape, I was never really able to do push-ups properly.

Mostly the same problem for me, but playing basketball out in my driveway this spring must have helped a bit, since I managed 4 (although the last one was a bit questionable as to whether it was good form or not).
Nevertheless, I will take part in this.

Why do you have so much power on your machine? My MBP has Intel i7 2.2GHz quad, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, and Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB built in, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB discrete. I've never had issues with speed except when running enormous amounts of flash.
Mostly because I can. I really only notice greater speed when I'm doing computational intensive stuff, like playing a 8 player (7 AI) game of civilization 5.

The problem is the fact that CiV was installed on your computer. Even vanilla Civ4 is better, and better yet the Beyond the Sword expansion. Also, BtS runs with minimum lag on my laptop, which has half the power of your PC.

...Makes my laptop (an HP Pavilion g6 with Windows 7, an Intel Pentium P6200 @ 2.13 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, ~250 GB of memory, and a graphics card bad enough to create lag on Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2) look like an old XP tongue

  6. I've always loved this one by Robert Browning for the history behind the poem.

    Quote:
    Through The Metidja To Abd-El-Kadr

As I ride, as I ride,

With a full heart for my guide,

So its tide rocks my side,

As I ride, as I ride,

    That, as I were double-eyed,

He, in whom our Tribes confide,

    Is descried, ways untried

As I ride, as I ride.

As I ride, as I ride

To our Chief and his Allied,

Who dares chide my heart's pride

As I ride, as I ride?

    Or are witnesses denied---

Through the desert waste and wide

    Do I glide unespied

As I ride, as I ride?

As I ride, as I ride,

When an inner voice has cried,

    The sands slide, nor abide

(As I ride, as I ride)

    O'er each visioned homicide

That came vaunting (has he lied?)

    To reside where he died,

As I ride, as I ride.

As I ride, as I ride,

Ne'er has spur my swift horse plied,

Yet his hide, streaked and pied,

As I ride, as I ride,

Shows where sweat has sprung and dried,

    Zebra-footed, ostrich-thighed

How has vied stride with stride

As I ride, as I ride!

As I ride, as I ride,

Could I loose what Fate has tied,

Ere I pried, she should hide

(As I ride, as I ride)

    All that's meant me---satisfied

When the Prophet and the Bride

    Stop veins I'd have subside

As I ride, as I ride!

  7. I ususally compare item value by sell value to weight ratio. If one object gives you x coins for y weight, and a second object gives you 2x coins for .5y weight, the second object is obviously better, and can get you a pretty decent profit. I do the same in the Geneforge series (but mainly just with coin value in the later games, since the junk bag was added).

Welcome to Spiderweb Software. Please leave your sanity at the door for the fluffy pink turtles. Using the UBB search function will cause you to lose any remaining sanity. Thank you, and enjoy smile

  9. Flip flops and sandals do NOT work when playing basketball in your driveway. And I suggest not trying it tongue. However, 90% of the time, I wear flip flops or sandals. Speaking of which, I should go find those...

Thats like the story of my life whenever I buy anything electronic. I'd imagine the same for many, many others.

For me, almost all electronics have what they need, it's the games that screw up the electronics (Black Ops to name one).

  12. The five fonts I primarily use are Rockwell (for typing if I don't want to use TNR), Papyrus (same as Rockwell), Times New Roman (my default when typing), Copperplate Gothic (for titles and headings), and Cloister Black (a medieval-looking font that I use for titles).
