  1. I always cast protective spells I'll go back and try to isolate one at a time, I was just afraid I had a badly built character or something. Oh, and is there any particular reason you can't forge shields? I find it kind of irritating. -Duality
  2. I'm playing an Infiltrator as a hardcore rebel (almost no pro-shaper quests at all) and I just (finally) finished off Monarch. So I went up to Burwood, south road and *BAM* two wingbolts wipe out my entire party..... Whaaaaa......? Sure, Monarch was hard, but he wasn't THAT hard! I'm level 28, I have a Cryoa that's been with me since almost the begining and a Drayk that I made not that long ago. She's mainly melee with decent spell casting. I've cleared out almost every area (except the shaper gamma thingy) and have fairly good gear but this is insane, I'm way out of my league. Did I miss something? Was there another section I should have gone through? -Duality

    Intel

I'm just curious if there are any plans to update Blades of Avernum to UB? It just tried it out on my new intel iMac and it runs very slowly. Painfully slowly, even with sounds and background noises disabled. Oh yeah, and Avernum 4 wont even launch, and when I tried to download the demo as a test, my computer told me it was an OS 9 app. (I don't care particularly, just thought I'd let you know)
  4. Wow. I believe so, I was amazed when I got 544 health, 129 energy at the end of a battle, but that's insane!
  5. There's no one in the castle to report that you did all the tests to? It says that they were set up by the castle after all..... The 6th test is somewhat easier because the wolves don't attack you on the first round, and then they help you. If you had to fight them AND the demons it might actually have been harder. As it was, it was way to easy for where it is in the game.
  6. Falchion of evasion is in the tunnels to rentars fortress, on a party of brainburned adventurers. (thought I'd put that in since you don't have the location and I just found it) And the moon-eye girdle is on the eye beast that guards a bridge in the same area the crystalline plate is in the castle treasury.
  7. No, I store each different type in a different box. Why do people insist on refering to themselves in the third person? It's somewhat.... bizarre.

  9. This is nitpicking, but if you reposte a spined enemy, you don't take damage from the spines on the reposte
  10. Icedrake Vampbraces: 4% armor 5% stun resistance -5% chance to hit 8% cold resist Found on Kolchiss the drake in rentars lair Quicksilver Sandals: 2% armor +1 action point -2 strength Worgskin Cloak: 7% armor Both found in rentar's crypt And Snipers Vest: 4% armor +1 Dexterity +2 Sharpshooter Found on a body on your way in to rentars lair, just nw of the three pillars guarding a book of icy rain/lightning spray. Shadow Band: +1 parry +1 gymnstics +1 defense And no idea where I got it. Don't forget the absurd Gazerskin Sandals: 20% armor +10% stun resistance +10% hostile effect resistance Flowing Cloak: 2% armor +1 parry +1 quick strike Treated Carapace: 10% armor 10% poison resistance Ivory Band: (there might be more of these) 2% armor 15% mind effect resistance I may actually have to play through and find where these items are.... Oh yes, and can someone ban the imbecile who posted below me?
  11. I did get the key from fort remote, but the door it opened only seemed to lead to some spell books. Charging forward blindly killing everything that moves might work, but I made it this far without killing a single pylon Just out of curiosity, how DO you kill those pilons? They keep freezing my characters......
  12. Ok, so Houghten got knocked off, and I went off to fort remote to kill Rentar-Ihnro. I meandered my way through all those freakin pylons (gah do I hate those things) without ever needing to kill one of them, but know I'm stuck. I found the 4 vahanatai who are supposed to "retrieve" rentar, but I can't figure out where to go. I'm near a bridge with a eye-beast on it. Suggestions?
  13. Actually, a bunch of those aren't unique, there are at least 4 woven silk robes in the game, grounded cloak also appears multiple times. The item shop sw of for Saffron gives a ruby amulet as a reward. You posted shielding knife twice There are multiple armor rings as well, and at least two girdles of genius (some both my mage and my priest are wearing one, but who knows where I got them) Since you can make as many blessed breastplates as you have ingrediants, I wouldn't consider them unique either. Anyone know if there are multiple mercuric leathers? I know I found a mercuric chain somewhere as well. And Ginth? the bandit has a frozen sword, which I believe is unique, but slightly better then the flame sword.
  14. Acutally, there are two incantors rings, once if found in a crypt (I have no idea where I found it though, south of the castle I think) guarded by a golem
  15. Actually, I saw him chug 6 speed potions per round without casting terror on him. It was the strangest thing I've ever seen. Made him a heck of a lot easier to fight though. I will say that the AI in A4 is about the dumbest thing I've ever seen. If an enemy sees one of your characters far away, it runs towards them until it runs out of movement points, usually stopping right next to my fighters so they get a round of free hits before it gets to move again. (considering it's inability to work together or make even moderately intelligent choices, I'd believe he wrote it in 5 minutes while drunk)

  17. I'm not sure whether this is a bug or not, but the Transient Sentinals guarding Demonslayer don't give exp and first aid doesn't work after you fight them. (are first aid returns exp based?) And I don't think it's because of the level difference, although I am level 20. Also, when training skills, if you meet the requirements for a special skill, it wont appear until you leave the training screen and then hit train again. And, you can only train twice in riposte. You have to leave the training screen and come back, then you can train twice more. Is it just me, or are hp's much harder to obtain them sp? I have 7 in INT and 10 in END and I have 130 hp's and 165 sp's.
  18. Well, there's the dispellable barriers in Fort Emerald. And apparently you can shoot Gorath Icelord (nice name) from afar without him ever hurting you, since I don't think he can move.
  19. Ah, found it! Fairly close to the entrance too, no wonder I couldn't find it, I was wandering around in the depths of the honeycomb....
  20. Err... Where is he? I can't seem to find him, even though I've been all over the Honeycomb.
  21. Take the top path from Mertis, take the immediate right, go past the first intersection to a screen with three stairs leading down, take the far right path. Once down the stairs, go up/left, skipping the first branch and taking the second, there should be a set of stairs right there. Once up the stairs, go straight up, you should almost immediately come upon a small path with a set of stairs down. Take the stairs. Follow the path (there are no branches) and take the stairs. Follow the path again (no branches) and take the stairs. Again, follow the path and take the stairs. (bored yet?) Almost there. Follow the path until it comes to a a split, take either one, since they both lead to the same place and continue following the path until you see a side passage to the north, take it and Sleater is right there. Phew, hope that helps. (hope its coherent enough)
  22. Actually, I believe you are refering to Iron Spears, correct me if I'm wrong though. I don't believe you can obtain another steel spear until you are well into the eastern gallery. Pukka? What does that mean?
  23. After reading all these posts I'm getting nostalgic for Exile.... I think the biggest thing that irritated me about Avernum when I first played it was that the enemies didn't respawn. I mean, how much sense does it make that after you kill some soldiers in an empire fort, leave, heal, wander around, do whatever and come back 5 days later, they didn't bother to reinforce the fort? Plus there's no wandering critters in A4. In a time of such turmoil, I would imagine that every nasty nasty in the universe would come crawling out of its cave, yet I can walk freely anywhere once I've cleared the normal, dumb collections of bandit/chitrachs, etc. And I have to say, while the combat has been "improved", it doesn't mean much, I don't think I've seen a dumber AI anywhere. (centipede was smarter) It doesn't really make combat "harder" to allow the enemies to do massive damage and have tons of hp's, it just makes it take longer. Part of what I liked about all of previous games was the story, I always found them interesting, they made me want to keep playing. I have to say, so far A4's story is predictable and boring. No lights! No lights! Who wanders through a dungeon without light?! And while I suppose technically it makes sense that a party that spends all their time bashing other peoples head's in wouldn't really want to spend time solving puzzles, it did, on occasion, break up the endless killing. For secret doors, I do miss them, although, I don't miss hitting 14789632 all the time. Perhaps they could be linked to intelligence (perception) and luck, because no one in their right mind would ram into wall after wall, looking for one that wasn't really a wall. But if you could be allowed to "spot" them if you had a character with high int, tool use and luck, might make it more interesting. Item ident/paying for training are personal choices, they both make more sense if your going for a more realistic approach, and I prefer them, but not having either of them does streamline the game somewhat. Kelandon, I don't think it is a NEW game engine, it looks to me like they took the Geneforge engine (which I hate by the way, all three geneforges bored me to tears) and added some cave graphics. Which means there is no excuse for a game that is nothing but mindless bashing of heads... I guess in the end it comes down to, do you like a more realistic world (need to id things, need to have people train you, monsters actually put more guards out after you killed the last set, etc.) or a more "newbie friendly" world. I prefer realism. (but don't knock the portals, with no wandering monsters, it serves NO purpose to walk all over the damn place) Oh yeah, and there is no good way to handle death. But "unconscious" party members is absurd. I get hit in the face with a greatsword followed by a blast of lightning, and I'm just "unconscious"?! You should be lucky to find the pieces of your dead character after that happens. But perhaps you could incorperate multiple ideas, some things render you unconscious, and if you "wait" for a while you regain consciousness, some kill you, and you need your "good" god to revive you, (after all, you have been marked to save the world, or something) and some obliterate you (i.e. permanent death) Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like many people are saying that Jeff doesn't bother to listen to what people are saying, is that true? Becuase if it is, it's a good way to drive away a loyal base. I've played Spiderweb games since Exile I, but A4 might be the last one I play. Being as I am singularly underwhelmed by A4
  24. Damn. I did the exact same thing. The sulfur flats "trap" was butchering my poor party, so I went exploring. And because if I see a barrier I try to dispel it...... Well, I got the box, fortunately, I restarted right after, but that definitly seems like a nasty bug. And my mage only had 11 in mage, and 5 in magery, and only L1 dispel from the Colony quest. So it's not that hard to do.
  25. The lone guard just southwest of Fort Monastery has a Steel Spear (10 - 30), which at the start of the game is absurd. And no one cares if you kill her. Anyone know of any other examples of equipment that you can find early on that is far superior to what you normally find? (say a steel broadsword so my poor melee guy doesn't feel quite as wussy?)
