  1. I'm still having trouble finding a working BoE scenario editor for 10.8 - is there any plans to make one? I've tried using the Windows editor on crossover, but it can't find the graphics files, thus meaning I have a blank screen.

  2. I've discussed this with Kel before, but I'll be the first to admit I was rather hostile to the scenario (Exodus) when it was released - at the time I felt (1) influenced heavily by some of the oldbies, and (2) I had to play it for a contest, so I was rushed (and I think this might be part of why it didn't place well - a scenario like this (IMO) probably needs to be played over a long period of time to enjoy) and didn't enjoy it as much as I may have otherwise (but mostly 1). I haven't played Exodus in a while, but I hope to at some point and give a more thoughtful review. I placed it last in the judging, which if I were doing over, probably would have placed 2nd or 3rd on my rankings.

The problem is, some members didn't merely attack the scenario - they attacked people for liking the scenario (i.e. if someone said Bahss was a good or great scenario, they might be called an idiot) - for some members, this could cause pressure to dislike a scenario. (Honestly, some members made poor scenario design worse than no scenario at all, but that's another story).

As for a third scenario, I'd like to see it, but the only way Kel would make it is if a playing community reemerged in BoA - what's discouraging me from designing right now is no one seems to play this game anymore. That being said, if anyone's looking for a Bahss/Canopy sized scenario, feel free to play Of Good and Evil ;)

  3. I've downloaded Exile II for Windows, and am attempting to use CrossOver (the newest version) to launch it, but I get an error message saying, "Remove an existing group to install the game" (something to that extent). Does anyone play the game using CrossOver and/or know what to do? Thanks.

    EDIT: never mind, it works

  4. One show I didn't mention - Star Wars: The Clone Wars! It's surprisingly good, especially given the prequel films. The characters are very multi dimensional, and honestly, had it been the entire story before the OT, I believe it would have handled it very well. Not perfect, but worth watching.

    :(

Having a scenario design community also really helped the broader community. I suspect this comes from the level of investment one has to put in to make a high quality scenario. This investment of time and effort often translates into having an emotional investment into the community of people who play it. For much of the history of this community, the scenario designers and the fans of the scenarios formed its nucleus. Most of them are gone now because life moves on, and we're seeing the effects of it.

I think the problem is that (1) without an active community, no one's really interested in participating or making scenarios, and (2) the inactivity discourages many from designing, and (3) we're back to (1). I'm not sure how many people are playing the Blades games at this point. I agree that a new Blades game might spur activity, but if history is any indication, a new Blades game won't help BoE or BoA get off the ground again. The thing is, Jeff has to make games that will sell, and can't worry about creating an active community if it doesn't help his sales.

I ported Alcritas' Of Good and Evil to BoA recently because I liked the story (more than almost any new movie I've seen, for sure) and wanted more people to see it, but BoA nowadays doesn't have such a large audience either - while it did sell poorly, there was a time where, lots of people talked about BoA on the forums and were eager for new scenarios.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that a remake of BoA (or reprogramming it to make designing easier) will bring many new players in. Maybe a new Blades game in the new engine would revitalize a community for a short time, especially if the design process was easier, as *I mentioned.

    :(

It's been about 10 years since I joined the community - I was in my teens for a good portion of the time it was more active, and feel I missed out on some things. While I'll admit some things I don't miss (i.e. excessively negative members/comments), I do miss things such as discussing scenarios.

I've enjoyed working with the scenario editors, but if no one's playing the games, I hardly see the point. That being said, I feel that my skills lie more with interpreting information than creating, which is why (IMHO) my OG&E port turned out better than any of my scenarios.

  5. I realize this scenario has been kind of obscure, so if anyone is still interested in playing my 5th scenario, it's here on Jewels' website.

    TrueSite4Blades/crusaders.html

Just in case anyone's interested. It's about three years old, but it's been kind of obscure.

  6. I'm not sure how useful this will be, but I've thought if new people discover (or rediscover) BoE, one question commonly asked is - what scenarios are good? Where should I start?

I've decided to make a "pack" of scenarios, that could possibly be included with the download, to provide a number of quality scenarios that a player could check out after trying Jeff's scenarios. I picked scenarios that (1) were a wide variety of "genres" (humor vs. serious, small vs. large, hard vs. easy, etc), and (2) most of which would be easy for a new player to get into (except for NTH, in case a player wanted to try a "different" kind of scenario). I feel this could be useful in recommending scenarios to players - maybe it could even come with a download, if that's what people want, and finally I picked scenarios that are, in general, well-regarded by the community (not everyone will like every scenario, and some I like more than others here, but everyone has different taste.)

    Anyway, here it is: https://www.sendspace.com/file/36zwet

If people have different ideas of scenarios that should be included, let me know.

The idea is that if people want to find good scenarios, the game itself could provide some to start with before people have to go searching.

  7. My memory is a little shaky - I found a Crimson Ruby in the Stridor Cave, is there another "portal gem" there, or do I need to look elsewhere? Thanks.

    EDIT: N/M, figured it out.

There are two CRs in the Stridor Cave.

  8. I dunno. Maybe the traditional Avernum, except focusing more on the earlier games. I might start off small (8 players or so), as I haven't run a game like this before and don't want to go over my head. :p

  9. For those of you who have been around in 2009, you may remember a game called "Northern Isles" here (you can see the Misc. forum to see how it is played).

Would anyone be interested in this type of game? I'm thinking I would like to try hosting one. It will probably be in a different setting than the previous games.

  10. Just out of curiosity, when institutions look at GPA, do they focus more on the GPA of the courses in the main discipline or the general GPA campus-wide? For example, if one had a 3.65 GPA out of all the Biochemistry Major classes, but a 3.25 GPA in all classes needed for graduation, what do employers tend to look at more?
