Arcane Summon can only summon 1 monster at a time in all Avernum games. If the monster type is your problem, know that each level of Arcane Summon summons a different type of monster. Lvl 1 summons a demon, for example. Eyebeasts, and especially gazers, being very strong in various situations, you should be happy to get them!

Yeah, if someone invented a way to record people's dreams, using it for BoA scenarios would obviously be the first thing humanity would do.
-
Be sure to play Avernum as often as you can before going to sleep. It's alot more calmative to dream about the stalagmites and dialogues in Avernum than the Burnout 3 Gold Medal Tournament or Diablo 2 loot-grabbing.

"Faust" takes place in the 17th century, and the person Dr. Faust is not to be compared with Solberg in any way. Solberg's life-prolonging magic and all that stuff is not of the same nature as Faust's pact with the devil, and neither does he do what he does of the same reasons.
And the vahnatai are not communists, either. We've already discussed that in various threads.

Ignore items' "value". As you've already noticed yourself, this "value" doesn't actually tell you how useful an item is most of the time. How exactly items' properties are calculated, I don't know - but I do know that in A3, a stick deals out more damage than the most expensive of super-duper weapons at later stages, thus the possibility to sell these expensive weapons.
Edit: To be more clear - items don't have any properties that don't show up on the info screen. Not since A3.

Maybe he wants to build some drama for Avernum/Geneforge 6?
Like in movies, you know. When you think all is lost and everything, the happy end weighs so much more.
Or Jeff's just venting. Hu knows.

You definately have enough time. Plus, you get to go to the tower of magi as often as you like as soon as you've completed one of the major quests, so there's no real need to finish the game before day 160.
Actually, I envy people who can play that slowly. I always rush though the game and never see the surface change. Crumbling cities rock!

300? You gotta mean added dmg from all your targets. That wouldn't be much, but 300 a target is impossible.

Hardiness is an awesome skill, by the way. Don't neglect it.
And try to avoid a mage/priest-combinations. If you spend your skill points and your money on too many different things, you won't become good at anything.
-
@Toby-Linn: That's not what I meant. You should always(!) use custom characters, because of the waste of skill points. When I said don't worry too much about party build I meant you should experiment more and look to it that the characters themselves work out, and let intuition do the rest. Again, go with a 2-char or 3-char party and see what happens.
@feo takahari: Though I can't say much about how to improve your gameplay, I can definately say this -
Quote:My mage and priest level intelligence, arcane lore, and respective mage and priest spells exclusively. -
I'd suggest to not think about the build too much before creating your party. Just delete 1 or 2 characters and see what your intuition tells you to do!

You know, most of the questions of this sort (including the ones you posted here) are thoroughly explained in the websites found above the threads in this particular subforum.

I'm sure it is
Just watch out that you don't get crucial spells like Divine Restoration any later than possible when playing a more flexible character build. -
The level cap in A2 is 40. I'm not sure I ever hit it, though. But then, I've never been a very thoroughly-playing player.
Encumbrance really shouldn't be a problem at all, especially because hardiness is so very useful to singletons. Plus, if I recall correctly, you can't cast mage spells wearing encumbering armor even if your encumbrance is de facto nullified; that means you won't wear heavy armor anyway if you want to use mage spells above Slow.
I should add that a singleton fighter priest is commonly regarded as far more effective than a singleton fighter mage.
-
I'm pretty sure there isn't, though you can get quite a high amount of vahnatai lore if you buy the first 5 levels from a trainer and then get the rest by other means.
But then, I think it's absolutely legitimate to cheat some lore for a singleton.

Though there's a lot I'd like to reply to the last few postings, I'll cut it to just one comment: monotheism and polytheism started going separate ways when "Enuma elis" was invented in Babylon in the 8th century BC. Looking into the Marduk-cult is sure to bring you a better understanding of the religions that evolved later in the surrounding area.
However. Why are we discussing this here, anyway? I don't think Jeff would go like "Hm, I think I'll make god the last boss in A6... but oh no, wait! The christian god is actually a trinity,* and I already had a splitting boss in A5! Oh gosh, if I only knew a religion who's god is a purely monotheistic one! Maybe I can find something about that in the boards..."
* Or however you would phrase that.

You're jiggling a little too much with the term "god" here.
Japanese "gods" aren't anything like the christian or muslim "god". They're spirits, nothing more. No all-powerfulness, no nothing. And they can be killed, even in japanese mythology.
As little are characters gods or semi-gods, just because they're good at fighting. Where's the logic in that?

Quote:I don't remember if it uses the word "lieutenant" specifically, though.
He did. I searched Slarty's sites for that passage we were talking about yesterday, and before I got tired of it and stopped halfway, I found a passage in which this demon calls himself Grah-Hoth's "lieutenant". -
I know Grah-Hoth is referred to as chieftain most of the times, but I'm absolutely sure he's called "lieutenant" too once, because it made me ponder the exact thing we're discussing here. Don't make me replay it all again to look where.
-
Quote:Grah-Hoth as mere lieutenant? Are you sure you're not thinking of Adze-Haakai, often referred to as Grah-Hoth's lieutenant?
Grah-Hoth is also referred to as lieutenant at some point. I'm not sure if it's in A1 or A2, though. I played them both through very recently.
However, there was no hint on who/what Grah-Hoth's commander is. Maybe he had none, and all independent demon-lords are called lieutenants, or Grah-Hoth was indeed the master of all demons, but "lieutenant" just sounded more appropriate for some reason.
I don't think christian symbols should be a part of Avernum. And how the hell are you supposed to fight an all-poweful god anyway? Though I really, really miss the "good vs bad"-feeling of A1+A2, bringing in angels and stuff like that would be overkill. -
When I finished A1 again a couple of days ago, a goblin some demon had summoned picked up the mind crystal in the southeast part of Grah-Hoths fortress! When I killed him, he didn't drop it either. Pink bastard.
Imagine a goblin with Blademaster. Or a rakshasa with magery.

I always steal. Even when I'm playing good (yes, I'm one of those who gives their characters personalities and everything), because I figure that my party needs money and equipment more than anybody else. So, with a bitter smile, I give up my selfish desire of feeling righteous and do what's best for humanity (and all other creatures antropomorph or impressive enough to be considered worth saving).
Heh. Now I feel like Batman in "The Dark Knight".
-
Well, there are some minor quests you can take on if you talk to everybody in all the smaller towns. You've done quite much everything interesting already, though, so I really suggest you buy the full versions someway. It's worth it!
-
There is a damage cap for each attack type in all Avernums (at least A1-3, not sure about the others). That means it's not Elite Warrior that stops improving, it's your damage that can't be improved. Though that cap can be reached very fast, Elite Warrior is still worth it because it helps so much in the beginning. Plus, it still enhances your to-hit percentage.
Oh, and note that these caps differ alot in the various Avernums. In A3, you can easily deal over 100 melee damage, while that's not possible in A1.
A1 & A2 Arcane Summon
in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)
Posted
You can't. Not with Arcane Summon however, with Capture Soul/Simulacrum you can, but that spell doesn't exist in Avernum 1.
In Avernum 2 and 3 that Simulacrum would be your spell, but it's expensive and not that easy to get. By the time you can use it (and use it regularly), you should've captured more powerful monsters than drakes.
