Well, it looks like the Avernum 3 remake will come out on January 31, 2018 - at least on PC. I hope Jeff will remake the Geneforge games - especially the first two, after this. They could definitely use a more modern UI and improved graphics palette.

Hooray, it's happening! The graphics in the intro to that video brought me back ... I remember very similar visuals in Exile III.

  2. (right now, never could play the original Exile: Escape from the Pit- hated the fact that doors didn't show as opened or closed like in E2 or E3)

Haha, I thought I was the only one. I happened to start with Exile III and couldn't ever play the first two.

Actually, I think he might be asking about the Avernum 3 remake. Given that Avadon 3 won't be out until next summer, I wouldn't expect Avernum 3 until the end of 2017.

Geez, that's a long time from now. On the plus side, it gives me some time to try to forget the storyline so that I can experience it as if it were new.

  3. By series, the first Avernum trilogy. By individual game, I'd pick Exile 3, but Avernum 1-2. The first two Exiles just felt too rough around the edges, and I'd already played their remakes by that point. Exile 3 on the other hand was my intro to SW.

I feel the same way on games. Exile 3 was also my intro. I took a long time off before playing the new Avernum 1 and later 2. Anxiously awaiting the remake of 3.

  4. Various types of hoarding.

Making an arbitrary collection of something. One of my characters is amassing as much cloth and coal as they can in their inventory, and never selling any of it.

Never selling any unique item, even if I don't plan on using it. The floor around the tower of magi portal is littered with enchanted armor and weapons.

I'm also trying to see how long I can go without selling any crystals or gold. One of my characters has an inventory full of sparkling treasure.

For me it's rocks. I don't think I ever sold any gold or fine steel either.

  5. There really is a time limit that starts ticking once you tell the vahnatai to march on Ornotha Ziggurat. If it expires you can still enter the ziggurat, but you'll have to get in without help from the vahnatai, which will make your life harder.

But if you can get past the first big fight with the help of the Vahnatai, you can leave the upper levels of Ornotha Ziggurat until later.

Thanks for the guidance. Once I realized that it was way easier to fight than to try to run around the outside, I got through without a problem.

  6. I've ended up in Ornotha Ziggurat with a bunch of Vahnatai from Fort Haledon helping me out in a big combat at the entrance. The message dialogues seemed to indicate that there was a time-critical component to this. I'm still relatively early in the game, haven't explored any Empire lands at all, which is why I was a little surprised to pop out deep in enemy territory fighting Garzahd. I think I'm supposed to slip past, but he always seems to be camping out right where I need to go.

Anyway, I don't think I can make it through. Is it actually time-critical? Looking through my quests, I don't have anything specific to infiltrating Ornotha Ziggurat (after completing the Fort Haledon quest), but I don't want to let these dudes down after I told them they were ready and they marched out. Anybody know what happens if I just leave to go work on other parts of the game?

  7. We just added a "General Tech Support" post to the top of the forum. Be sure to take a look at it. I really think it will help your problem.

    - Jeff Vogel

Hi Jeff! Thanks for responding. Since I've got you here, I'll tell you that I'm really enjoying Avernum 2, just as I did the Avernum 1 remake. My last Spiderweb Software game prior to that was Exile III in the late 90s and so it's good to finally get the backstory.

Anyway, I've tried some of the things mentioned in that topic and also on the support page. I should also mention that I have the game through Steam.

The following things did not work:

    1. Restarting my computer.
    2. Uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
    3. Updating my graphics card drivers (although it was a good thing to do).

I then downloaded the demo so that I could try the DirectX version of the game. It gets a little weird here -- it still happens while saving, but seemingly less frequently. I haven't done a whole lot of testing though because my save file is beyond where the unregistered version can play (it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that was why the screen was black). I'll update here when I have more information. My uninformed hunch though is similar to Randomizer's, that it seems to be related to memory/file access.

Also I noticed that 2560x1440 in DirectX doesn't work (the executable crashes) and the artwork colors are no bueno.

  8. I'm having an issue consistently with Avernum 2: Crystal Souls on Windows 7 SP1 where gameplay will freeze intermittently for a few (5 to 30) seconds. During the freeze, nothing on the screen will move, and the cursor will turn into the Windows 7 spinning circle until the freeze is over.

This happens with some regularity in the following scenarios:

    1. Saving, either autosave or right after I click the checkbox to save the game.
    2. During combat, right after the hostiles have all taken their turn, just before it is my party's turn to go.

It also happens randomly while walking around. I don't think I've ever had it happen while in a conversation or looking at items though.

Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks!
