Raise your primary attacking stat as high as possible (Strength for melee fighters, Dexterity for archers, Intelligence for spellcasters); it has a much stronger effect on your hit rate than anything else. Also, body armour and shields are the only pieces of gear with hit penalties that you should generally be wearing early in the game: the hit penalties from other gear often aren't worth the small advantage they have over equivalent pieces of equipment that don't give penalties. Eventually your stats will be high enough that you can wear whatever and still have a 95% hit rate, but it is a concern early on.
thx a lot.

I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to deal with the -% to hit that comes from armor. I am so hesitant to put on anything thats gonna make more misses.
misses = death
whats the best strategy

my group hates any 3-4 monster/npc casters that chain cast daze.
360 damage would almost kill my entire party right now.

So I am playing avernum escape from the pitt.
I figured we should have a topic describing our party (or favorite party) playing through this game.
My characters are lvl 14. I haven't played computer games for like 6 years and I was never a power gamer. So my characters are on the edge, getting completely messed up, dying, and that has effected their personalities a little
FIrst Char is:
Neeros male dual wield warrior, with a couple points in priest and I used the editor to add a couple cave lore points cause I wanted him to be like a ranger. He throws javelins and razordisks
he's died dozens of times so I play him like he's got a little ptsd. he carries a lot of boos and we always make sure to buy him a drink at the inns.
Captain Etrea Archer/thief I've had a real hard time with her being effective. archery is kind of weak sauce for her but so is she the leader. talking to npcs. I changed her name to captain when we got our own boat. She has the negotiator trait.
Farnsworth Priest heavily armored. Healer who thinks he's a fighter. If there's a fight we have well in hand he'll think he's the greatest warrior on earth. He uses polearms.
Seeoni - mage with a couple points in heal incase farnsworth charges an ogre and gets himself killed. Shes aloof and always seems to run the wrong direction then I want her too. I imagine she's more like a sorcerer since she isn't the smartest.

hey, there aren't that many ways to have fun in avernum, so people are going to get creative with what's available
I lived in a small town growing up, there was 2 things people can do no matter where you are.

geneforge lets play's at work. sometimes just listening. It's making me really excited to play them after I am done avernum. thx for all your hard work

i still have no idea how mine craft works

Exile III was my first RPG for the PC, when I was a kid I spent almost a month doing chores to save up for the game and the guide. I still have the disk and guide in my closet. The game was amazing, I think I put about 2000 hours into it over the course of my Macs 8 year lifespan.
My question is this, is there a remake of Exile III ? if so which one is it? I have such good memories of it that I would love to play it again.
that's one heck of a testimonial right there.

why is everyone such a god damn genius. Everywhere you go from the [man] on the corner to [a] troll on a forum. genius genius genius. every single one of them.
I may be the only non genius in the world. you know what I think spiderweb should do. Make a game that asks it's user what game it would like to play, what features, game play, story and then creates it. . . . . wait someone already made that game. all you need to play it is to be a genius and fortunately every internet troll ive met is a ......genius.

I lived in Washington for a long time and saying "eh" was punishable with a punch in the arm.... at least a punch in the arm.

The remix is cool enough that Jeff is raiding it for ideas for Crystal Souls. That said, it's probably best to play the original version of AEFTP first, then try the remix. And it has a few bugs of its own, which Slarty never got around to finishing off.
cool thx.
whats crystal souls?

1 man can't do alot and he needs to sleep and eat too and do other things.
sleep is over rated.
we all pay 10-20 dollars for the game so that means we own his entire life right? Sorry my father was an internet troll and my mom......mom just knitted counted her rosery all day. I may not have a clear understanding of right and wrong.
Why doesn't spiderweb hire 1000 monkeys working on 1000 typewriters to make the worlds most epic gaming code?
-
why does everyone think they can just attack the game designer directly. like spiderweb has to answer to every single criticism .... If you wanna make your own games ... do it.
if you wanna program a mod for said game. do it.
you wanna take your business else where. do it.
all the sudden because a game developer is more accessible and needs to listen a little more to his fanbase everyone can tell spiderweb it's business.
It reminds me of all the irritating rules lawyers at tabletop rpg sessions. Those completely unaware of themselves know it all's that just cant sit back and go on a ride.

im playing avernum 6 and I love it. I dont know, it has it's charm. It's definitely hard to go from the newer engine to the older one but after playing so many poorly written games. It's still playable.
I like it alot actually. Somehow my characters have developed unique character in combat, to me anyway. My priest is always wanting to bust up a demon with his sword. My archer is kind of a coward. My fighter has died so many times that he has ptsd. My mage is aloof and doesnt know whats going on.
I've found it impossible to tear myself away from my party. I do look forward to AEftP and reading that a sequel is coming..... giddy.
-
in Avernum: Escape from the Pit it's mostly just there for flavour (so to speak).
*drum roll*
-
I think AEftP may be my new favorite title in the series. I've spent about twenty hours playing it last week alone and I loved pretty much every single minute of it (though I find Slarty's mod indispensable). The last Avernum title to capture my attention like that was A4, years ago.
The new engine is spoiling me... And of course, I'm also happy about the return of Phil Foglio's illustrations.
I couldn't agree more.
what mod is indispensable ? I didnt know there was mods for the games
-
k thx a lot guys.
I thought you had to eat to live? like you had to have food in your pack to eat not just to heal.
-
also. if u have food in one of your characters inventory does that go to feed all your chars or just you the character whose pack its in
-
when you use an altar. do all your characters improve their spell skill? or just the leader or highlighter character?
-
oh I thought that other post was called "this game sucks so hard."
-
what about alchemical equipment and bolts of cloth?
-
I like junk items alot, they can tell part of the story. Give a hint about whats going on. Make a place seem lived in. but I think there should be a way to tell which ones are really important.

Jeff traditionally starts beta testing in August/September for his next game. He is currently finishing iPad testing of Avadon 2 for release on February 28.
