Perhaps not a household name like Steve Jobs was. But during his work at Bell Labs, he co-created Unix (one of the most widespread family of operating systems, especially once you look beyond just desktop computers), he designed the C programming language (a more portable and more powerful alternative to assembly languages, and has influenced virtually every programming language designed since), and he co-authored The C Programming Language (one of the first language manuals written and considered a standard for good technical writing).
