This games are far from being imba or unplayable. A1 and A2 are my favourite parts of whole saga (i don't like second trilogy graphics), and there is always a way to win. If You go for too hard enemies stand back and level up a bit on softer enmeies (i was thinking that sliths in A1 were unbeatable when i was lvl 5...).

Yup i know. I had it on my Main charcater in A1 reassembled ofc (it would be hard to kill Grah-Hoth without it), but i finished first avernum standing with my party in middle of fort Draco, and despite that it (demonslayer) is not in fort Draco in Avernum 2

No, it's Hardiness. This is easy to test with the character editor. Give a new character a bunch of heavy armor, go into combat mode to make sure he has an AP penalty. Go back to the editor and raise Hardiness. Reload game and go into combat mode again. Penalty gone? Check.
As for the base damage reduction, it's random.
Thanx ;-)

Blessed plate and Polished plate (second best armor) are both available in grah-hoth lair. One drops from demon himself and second is hidden inside his armory.

Unshackle mind helps too. It wears off DF effect. In gremlin's gold and gremlin cave it is a must otherwise your warrior would kill the rest of party (with alien blade, gloves of strenght and boots of speed warrior can deal 200+ dmg in single turn what is enough to slay any caster in my team because of poison effect).
Edit: i probably messed two effects right? DF isn't one cast by gremlins, it is the one that disables castiing abilitirs and can be obtained from erika books. Sorry for mess.

Haste+slow when having few levels in repel spirit makes undead just a pile of bones ;-) it is really great combination against them (if you have 1-target haste use it on your priest so that he can cast repel twice each turn).

I do not want to use editor (used it once to reset boats because had lost track of one of them and cannot get to hidden tower). Ishad thanx for hint about crystsl shield - it helps a lot, it saved my ass in few other locations. Anyways Randomizer was right and getting orb did not require killing basilisk.
I was gettin orb when my party was early 30's so it wasn't really early game :-) now when i finished almost whole game (at least all of main quests - because i am sure there is still a lot of side ones to do) i start to play my favourite part of saga which is A2. First time i played it it was a demo, now thanx to GOG i have full version, and at last i understand the prologue about striking hawthorne :-) Still don't understand why it does not say anything about me slaying adze or grah or why i can't find demonslayer in Fort Draco where i finished first avernum :-)
Cheers to everyone and Thank You Spiderweb for giving us this great saga (my favourite right after planescape and baldur's gate).

@Randomizer so weaker armor with higher "+" is better than stronger without it (ea fine leather>studded leather)? Or is thee a way to "force" armor to use it's upper reduction limit?
As to the main topic i am asking because last post in this confused me (it says defense reduce AP penalty while hardiness reduce to hit penalty).
-
So is AP penalty in A2 reduced by hrdiness, defense or str?
And one kinda not connected question about armor: which of two theoretical armor would be better 1-10+4 or 1-18?

4 humans - i used to it in a1, all are custon chars.
1) Male - swordsmen, strong, with high melee, hardiness, a lot of endurance and some dex.
2) Female - rougelike, a lot of dex, tool use, bows. With decent melee skill and hardiness.
3) Male - cleric with high int and endurance. Having a bit of melee and decent hardiness.
4) Female - magi, hell of an int with decent hardiness and a lot of arcan lore and potion making.
As you noticed i love hardiness i found it to be probably the most useful stat no matter what class is character.

Oh thanx
I thought Thralni is guarded by those two basilisks but couldn't check if it lies in any of their nests because get stoned
P.S> I thought Thralni s special item (like Branches or Athame - not a common one).
-
Hi. I have problems with recovering orb of thralni. in the caves there is a lot of basilisks and they stone whole my party before i am able to kill them (they are stacked up for 2-3 in each place). I've red somewhere that crystal charm prevent from being stoned (and crysal shield but i use 2-handed weapons on 3/4 of my chars - the last one uses bow).
Can someone give me locations where Crystal charms may be obtained (i think i had one but i probably sold it)?
-
Thanx. It works :-)

Hello.
As avernum hints manual says:
One disadvantage of Avernum 1 is that there is no Info-Catagory "Current Quests" as in Avernum 2 and 3, which lists all uncompleted quests. It is therfore a good idea, when you are given a quest, to make a note of it (who gave it to you and in which town he/she lives). A relatively simple way of doing this is to record the dialogue in your Journal/Notes which can be read with the Read Journal button. When the task is completed, the record can be deleted. In the course of the game you will also need boats. There are three seperate waters you can/must sail on, so you will need at least three boats. It is a very good idea to keep a note of where you have left them. In this case the Journal cannot be used. But how an i record dialogues in Journal?
i often play on different computers (sometimes i use PC, work PC, Notebook) and carrying the paper sheet with notes with me is not always possible (and using notepad file under Avernum window is uncomfortable).

Ouch right. I am really ashamed that i did not noticed that option. Sorry for that

Hi. i bought Avernum Series on GOG.com recently, and i want to do some character editing in A2 but i can't find downladable A2 char editor (Save Editor?). I've read a lot about such tool (item lists, possibilities it gives etc.) but can not find it online. Can someone pass me a link or mail me packed (.rar .zip?) editor?
Tough difficulty - special team?
in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)
Posted
As i mentioned somewhere i finished Avernum 1 and started playing A2 recently. Because i was finishing Avernum 1 on Hard difficulty (sometimeslike challenge) with almost default team (all classes were custom but they were very similar to default ones: Warrior-Rogue-Cleric-Mage). So same team i started A2 (no catman or lizardmen - just don't like them), and it come out that playing on Tough is... Well it's tough.
My team is (Stats are given in order - most importand to least importatnt): Warrior (Elite Warrior +Sickness prone) STR/END/DEX; Melee, Hardiness
Rogue (Nimble Fingers) DEX/STR/END; Bows, Tool Use
Cleric (No perk) INT/END/STR; Cleric, Hardiness
Mage (Natural Mage+Brittle Bones) INT/DEX/END; Mage, Lores (some arc some cave).
And for cleric and mage everything is ok thou spell dmg on enemies is terribly low (ice lance lv 2 dealing 6-13 dmg per target with 9 int ant 8 mag?). But Rogue and Warrior die in almost every combat i have to play combats 2-3 times before i can finish them without loosing any of them. Some combats are so tough that i have to resign of them (aranea lair for example). I am currently lvl 10 in Chapter 2: Dark Waters, having terrible problems with Ruined Water Fort.
Is there some special Team output for difficulties other than Normal? Or it is jus load-load-load until AI make some mistake and You win?
