There many other time based events.
Colchis is for instance destroyed on day 2. If you visit it on day 1 it is still intact, although it does not have any inhabitants.
Poubslo and Dellston and some other towns in the area get destroyed if you do not solve the Giant/Trogo problem soon enough.
I have not found out when Appleton gets destroyed but I remember visiting it once before the giants raised it to the ground.
I have also heard that Shayder gets attacked if you do not destroy the Filth Factory quickly enough.
There are certainly other time triggered events in the game

I have just finished A2 as a singleton with normal difficulty. Although it was a bit tricky at the start, it became easier as I went along. I did get killed more often as usual but although I could not get enough Vahnatai Lore to be able to read some tomes for level 3 spells, Angierach, the Empire Portal and Garzahd were actually rather easy.
Perhaps I should try a singleton with torment.

There is a way of getting Motrax's treasure in A1 and A2 without fighting him but not if you are playing a singleton: see my walkthrough .
-
Mab is right. The Empire Archives are at much the same place in A2 as in Exile 2.
Although I have only got to the end of the Dark Waters in my walkthrough, it just happens that I have already written the introduction to the Empire Archives .

All skills which can be assigned when defining the character, can be trained later. Particularly for a singeton it is important to differentiate between setup and a trained up character near the end or in the middle of the game.
Luck is a very important "skill" because it affects many secodnary skills and also contributes to random encounters. I however usually train in this skill later. The same goes for Intellegence, Hardiness, Defence, Assasination, Potion Making and Arcane Lore. First Aid appears to me to be utterly useless.
Character Traits are a different matter. They can only be assigned at setup. A few "Abilities" come with particular Character Traits:
- Elite Warrior: Go Beserk
- Divinely Touched: Call Spirit, Layon Hands, Natural Curing
- Beastmaster: Summon Beast
In other cases abilities can only be learned from Mind Crystals in A1.
Unlike A3 Natural Mage does not bring Restore Energy in A1 or A2.

There is nothing wrong in not knowing something. That does not make you stupid.
As I say in my walthrough
"I have been playing Spiderweb games for years. I started with Exile and went on to Avernum which I really enjoy. I have also played Nethergate which (except for the ending) I liked. I tried Geneforge but never really got on with it. Pehaps I am just to old fashioned – I like the old Dungeons and Dragons type of Games."
I learnt the games by playing them and making notes as I go along. When I get stuck I consult my notes then the Hints Book and if I still do not know, I look at the various published walkthroughs and hints.
If you have sold something you need, you can sometimes buy it back (only if the buyer did not have his list of goods full). Or you can cheat by using the Character Editor (for Greymould Salve "Add Tool"). Otherwise you have to find it some other way.
-
No, you just need Greymould Salve. There are a few bottles of the salve lying around (e.g. in the hidden research laboratory in the Slith Fort). You could also make some salve if you have found the recipe (near the Remote Lake south of Fort Draco).
There is a lot of fuss and confusion about greymould in A2. You just have to sort ot the truth yourself. Or you could read my description of Patrick\'s Tower
[EDIT: btw Miles is a sage in Formello and will teach you spells and sell the recipe for Strength Potion.]

Randomizer is right: not only can Cave Lore be bought (in Draco) but also Barter (Silvar), Archery (Duvno), Anatomy (Magi), Gymnasics (Emerald), Blademaster (Gnass) and Magery (Khoth).
I have not tried a singleton in A1, but I would think that Natural Mage and Elite Warrior would be a possible combination although the XP-penalty of 55% means you will not advance very quickly.
Natural Mage means, you can wear armour (including Boots of Speed) an still cast mage spells. Until you get Boots of Speed you can always use potions for hasting. This means you still get a hit in the first round but are speeded for later rounds.

This board is called "The Avernum Trilogy",so BoA and Avernum 4 do not belong here. In any case I agree with Alorael.

I do not quite understand where you are. Are you still in Kothtar?
There is only one portal here. It gets you out of the "Very Ancient Crypt" after killing some hraiths and vahnavoi. The portal brings you back near the Pillar Hall where there is only one way out: up to the Trapdoor Hall. This is probably where you mean.
There is a secrt door in the NE. Then go west and walk through a wall. There is a way through the maze of doors with only lock picking skill of 10. After that you come back to the Four Way Pit and it should be fairly easy to get out of Kothtar. You still need to be careful on the way back to Fort Remote because you could get ambushed by mutant giants.
The moral is save often and occasionally with a different name, so that you can go a bit further back.

Hallo Readhead,
I am also over 60 and have a bad memory. For that reason i wrote a
[EDIT: sorry not only am I forgetful, I do not read the posts properly. I told you about the walkthrough for A1 and you asked about A2. My walkthrough for A2 has only reached the end of the Dark Waters!]

What do you mean by "the alien beast factory"? The alien beasts are produced in the Keep of Tinraya. To get through the keep to Rntar-Ihrno you need the key you found in the cave in the NE of Upper Avernum, where the New Formello murders happened. To get out of the Keep of Tinraya you need a key to be found in a Vahnatai Cabinet after you have been captured by Rentar-Ihrno.
If you mean the Crumbling Factory, the key is on one of the Vahnatai on the north of the factory

I have got maps of all towns and dungeons and outdoor maps for chapters 1, 2 and 3 and a part of the rest of Avernum.
My approach to the walkthrough is different from Silver Harloe's, see the Dark Waters wihich is almost complete.
I will send an email to Kryten tomorrow (if I do not forget).
-
In any case you can pick Wendy up when you have got through the Dark Waters and soon after that Assotho. They will take Becca down a peg or two. Since she is an Elite Warrior she does not advance as quickly as the others; after picking up Assotho in one game my characters had the following levels:
- Becca: 17
- Wendy: 21
- Asotho: 20
- Madeye (my original priest/mage): 18

When Silverchat's site disappeared about a year ago, I started to write some walktroughs .
Just as I had finished Avernum I Silverchat's site came online again. I started on Avernum II but have not done anything on it for about a year.
If anyboby is interested I could work further on it.
Please let me know if you would like more on A2 and A3 or if you would like to help.

Yes I have. It all depends on your level and who you send in. If you want to get the Demonslayer at the earliest opportunity, you may not be able to kill them. You could however go back later and do them in.
Do not forget to look around the entrance chamber to the portal. There is some nice treasure there.
Although I am not very far through my walkthrough for A2, I have written a bit about the entrance chamber under Patrick\'s Tower .

Quote:—Alorael, who thinks the answer to the original question still hasn't been stated right. No, you cannot do anything because this is the UBB.
I (like Rent-an-Ihrno) live in the time zone CET (at the moment - summer time - GMT +2). Why can the time and date not be written in a gennerally understandable form? This message was posted at

I do not remember meeting him but I will keep an eye open for him in my walkthrough which is only upto the Hydra Lair. It will however take some time because I have a fulltime job and am in the process of moving house. So I do not have a lot of time for games.
-
Thanks. That is what I thought. I just hoped I might have missed something.
-
Has anybody found a way to get onto the platform in the NE of the Test of Strength where the Ruby Skeleton is standing? I would rather like to pick up the rubies taht are laying around on it!
-
The Hints Book says you need four brooches but it is better if you have found them all. I do not think you can get to the teleporter with less.
-
Thanks for the tip. I have always come in from the north, but I will try this way when I get around to it in my walkthrough which is as yet only up to the Coffin Caves on the Dark waters.
-
Zevi is wrong. I assume you mean the lever in the NW corner of the room in the NE of level 3. (I too often get mixed up with east and west.) This lever opens the locked door in the SW corner so that you can get up to the 4th level without having to sneak in from the north where you trigger a fight with 7 or 8 mutant giants.
If you already have Unlock Doors L3 you can open this door anyway.

I have tried a singleton in A3 but it was a bit difficult and I gave it up and picked up the NPCs.
Otherewise I use 4 Characters: melee-warrior, pole-warrior/priest with mage 3 (can hasten) and two priest/mages. Having 3 priests is very useful against undead.
Newbie needs help finding things to do in A1 demo
in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)

Quite right. The combat mode trick is strictly speaking cheating. You would probably also count the unlimited item resellers in A3 and the arrow regenerating trick in A1 and A2 as cheating.
