  1. Hello group. I thought I'd return for yet another latest Exile/Avernum playthrough (starting to drag my feet at returning to the same storyline every time though...).

     

    I'm having trouble with seemingly extreme sluggish graphics upon loading the latest download (1.0.1 for Windows). I don't doubt that I've got my drivers and graphics all buggered up on my Lenovo Thinkpad X200 laptop, so I'm more looking for fine-tuning guidance if at all possible.

  2. So uh, I guess I'm probably playing the game a little too compulsively, or I'm missing something. I've trained to the max level with every one of the skills trainers, and have trained to the max level in every spell I can find. There's not really any equipment that I could purchase better than what I've got, so I'm left with... any hints on how to spend my hoards?

    Hey Randomizer, I made it to Tenevra for the first time, and managed to make 34 knowledge brews. In comparison to your 50 listed, is this because I have not yet explored some of the areas and have thus not yet discovered the remaining 16 mandrake roots, or is it because I've missed them up to this point?

    (Probably an obtuse question since you don't know where I've explored, but thought I'd throw the question out there.)
  4. So, I hit the gold cap pretty darn quickly with my double-ton group. I've maxed out all of the trainers as of the eastern gallery chapter. I've even bought a bunch of souped up equipment which I'm likely to regret having spent the materials on, and quickly made it right back to 30,000 coins.

     

    Any more suggestions on spending this money, or should I keep it at cap until the next chapter?

  5. I'm off to the races with two slith battle spellcasters. I'll let you know how it goes.

     

    My starting config:

    DT/PS Battle Priest,

    STR=4

    DEX=2

    INT=4

    END=4

     

    POLE=4, MAGE=4, PRIEST=4

     

    DT/NM Battle Mage,

    STR=4

    DEX=2

    INT=4

    END=4

     

    POLE=4, MAGE=4, PRIEST=4

     

    This starting config left a few skill points to begin with in case I bobbled the strength or dexterity points and needed to buff them. So far, I've enjoyed the rapid fire level-up, and the kick-butt damage already dealt with my bronze spears.

  6. Thanks, Randomizer. I am thinking about playing a two-character party. Because of my affinity for melee, I'd love for those two characters to be one battle priest and one battle mage. I suppose I could add a layer of low-level spell crossover for both, so that both can cast level 6 mage and priest spells. Does that end up diluting any one character too much?

     

    Also, in my character development, because of my melee preference, is it better to use DT/EW for both, or DT/PS and DT/NM?

     

    Will my double-ton level up quicker than others if the experience points are shared only with two party members rather than four? If so, is there a level cap I should be aware of?

  7. So, there is inevitably a plethora of forum topics on the subject, but this one turned up high on the search results and was an amusing read. Hopefully no one minds the resurrection of a 2008 thread...

     

    I've been enjoying a mild walk through A6 with a relatively standard party setup: slith pole-wielding meatshield, nephil tool-turned-archer, human priest and human mage. Been kickin' butt through the game, and appreciating the variety of battles.

     

    Here's the thing: I just returned to A6 from Avadon and really missing the "re-trainer" function. A6 features a much more hands-on and complex character training system and I regretfully know how many errors I've made and fear to think about how much waste I've created in my player development by level 30 (e.g., haven't made it to battle frenzy on my meatshield!).

     

    I'm also wishing to goodness that I'd just chosen bows rather than thrown missiles, since the latter never refills enough!

     

    Anyway, to the point: I'm looking for a re-run on A6 but with a fun twist on the party setup. I've read through the variety of options out there. I'm somewhat of a min-maxer, so I like characters that are super strong in some elements, while lacking in others. I was thinking about two fighters, two priests, but not liking the prospect of having to use limited-availability piercing crystals for everything (I HATE not being able to clear a complete area.)

     

    It seems like some folks have gone with priest/mage combos, but does that end up with low-intensity spellcasting for either?

     

    I'm a big fan of melee-style playing (when I play the BioWare games of just one character, that character is generally some suped up fighter). Is it reasonable to soup up a melee-heavy team?

     

    Cheers to any feedback or general guidance I might get.

  8. So, this was a little humorous so I couldn't resist posting. Been wandering around the Abyss, doing odd jobs, and picked up the mission to defray the hidden brigands. However, I mixed up my east with west, and wandered into the purple marshes to the east... after spending a phenomenally challenging time clearing a dungeon surprisingly containing "loyalists" I realized that I had defeated the Darkside Loyalists gang! Whoops. Sorry, wrong door.

     

    Needless to say, when I went the correct direction and found the hidden brigands, they were NO match for me any more.

Note that you can get a decent dispersing of LB from items even magicians will use, and so without or before investing into Lethal Blow for anyone, you can enjoy some magnified attacks, magical or physical. Lethal Blow appears to add between 50-100% damage above the normal amount. Do you know the actual math? I'm usually too busy playing to pay very close attention to get a really clear notion of the actual numbers involved. I think LB is more fun and useful than Riposte. Attack investement seems to trump defensive investment, if you are not neglecting your ability to armor up and add some levels of endurance.

    Would you mind clarifying if "melee" as used in the first sentence refers to melee and pole weapons training, or just melee (as explicitly referred to in the statistics screen)?
  10. So, sorry if this post is elsewhere on the forums, but the keyword search was too generic to find the topic.

     

    I'm a bit of a hoarder, and have accumulated a small collection (two players' worth) of semi-precious items which I'd like to hang onto (shields providing a diversity of protections, robes with varying bonuses, etc.). In A6, is there a room in the castle reserved for me?

     

    God it's such an unnecessary luxury, I know, but damn it's fun for us hoarders...

     

    In other news, just crossed the 20K coins threshold - movin' on up to the 30K cap.

  11. Alright folks. I'm probably playing too easy, but I'm having a blast. I've not really spent any money upgrading spells or training my team, so I've amassed about 10K coins. I'm worried about hitting some software cap on wealth, so I'm looking for some guidance on the best place to spend my coins.

     

    I'm not going to lie, I loved the "retrain" feature in Avadon; I really tweaked my players that way. Didn't seem to feel too much like cheating.

     

    I know there are some trainers in the game who can seriously enhance a specific player, but at a cost. Is that worth it?

     

    PS: I'm still mucking about in the Great Cave; haven't done the Great Portal chore yet.

     

    PPS: I haven't sold any bars of gold, iron, fine steel, fine leather, emeralds, rubies, or any other crystals for that matter. Love it.

  12. Most of the time I've found that a little bit of patience and returning to a dungeon will solve most of my problems. However, I'm feeling a little impatient up here in Moritz'Kri's tower.

     

    I've cleared out the dungeon, except for the latent daemon summoned by Moritz, and I'm irked that I cannot get into the chamber with the rune-protected door in the cellars below the main tower.

     

    I've slewn everyone and everything, and haven't seemed to disable the power to that rune.

     

    Any guidance?

  13. So, having read through this topic, I find it to have covered some of the more BASIC party design strategy, and was therefore rather helpful for the non-power-gamer that I claim to be. I've read through the slartanalysis and other strategy posts, and find them rather challenging for the lay person.

     

    Here are a few points I've decided to heed in designing my next party based on the discussion here:

     

    1. no humans in the party

    2. everyone with Divinely Touched

    3. beef up endurance for everyone

    4. do not spend money on improving spell skills

    5. party makeup: 1 fighter/tool, 1 mage, 1 mage/priest, 1 priest

     

    Would anyone else agree?

  14. I've noticed that the area map is not shaded for areas unexplored. Is this intentional? I find it challenging to identify areas that I haven't explored yet, and given that the game window area (for those of us not playing on the 27" imac) is relatively limiting, I found the area map helpful for keeping track of my progress through the area.

     

    Is there an option to show shading for unexplored areas? Otherwise, I'll look at it as a challenge!

  15. The game is crashing (killed immediately, no error message) as I approach the end of the Goblin Mine. After the last platform crossing, I opened the gate to re-enter the supply fort basement (Nichol's area). Thinking that I could heal and recover my party before taking on Lord Trinket, I start to enter the basement. However, the game crashes as soon as I make it into the first room of the basement.

     

    Anyone else incurring this error? Sorry I can't be more specific.
