  1. I just downloaded the demo for Windows, and I can't wait to play it. I'm just starting the game now and I just noticed an issue that Windows 7 causes so I will mention what happens, why, and the solution, and it has nothing to do with Avernum -- so, it's not a bug in the game--, but it might leave some Windows 7 players confused.

    Problem:

When I start Avernum in Windows 7 the screen looks blurry and pixelated and the task bar overlaps the game screen even though Avernum is set to the native LCD-monitor's resolution and the game is also set to full screen mode.

The blurry screen, and fullscreen problems (it's not a bug in Avernum, really, it's Windows fault) appear when I start Avernum in Windows 7 when using a high dpi setting mode (I'm using 150%).

    Why this happens:

Because when Windows 7 runs programs in high dpi mode it runs those programs, by default, at a lower resolution then scales them up using the dpi setting. This solves problems with people being unable to see old programs, that were designed for a low resolution, using a small fixed size, while running at high resolutions.

You need to clear this setting for Avernum, and for any other program that already has high dpi support or runs visibly at high resolutions, because Windows 7 assumes you are smart enough to recognize these programs and deal with them yourself. So, you have to manually turn off this 'feature' for every program you think is capable of handling itself at high resolutions.

    What you can do:

Disable the high dpi scaling for Avernum, really you don't want scaling enabled for the new remake of Avernum (maybe for the original version that came out in the 90's-00's, but not this new one).

    How:

    1. Right-click on Avernum's shortcut icon.

    2. Select "properties" on the menu that pops up.

    3. Go to the "Compatibility" tab.

    4. Under Settings, put a check in the box labeled "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings."

    5. Use the "Apply" button to save this information.

You should now be able to run Avernum without problems on Windows 7.

  2. Which programming language(s) does Spiderweb Software use to develop its games? And, how does it apply to the development of dual-platform software? I can't seem to find that information on the website, form, or blog.

Is it simply one language, several languages used one after another over many years, or, perhaps, a custom, invented system known only to the creator of the games? I have been wondering what programming language or process is used because Spiderweb Software is one of the few companies who actually bothers releasing "hybrid" dual-platform versions of their games.

Is it a difficult process to convert software from one system to another? And, is it done "in-house" or is it outsourced to volunteers or trained workers? I would imagine that the process would become easier over the years as programming languages become alike, but there is still different software and hardware involved which could complicate things.

  3. *Spoilers ?

In Geneforge 3 there are three people who can join you. There are the two main ones Greta and Alwan in the early game. I also think there is a third, a shaper who will join you if you are a loyal shaper, I think (I was pro-rebel when I found him. He wouldn't join me because of it).

He is in Geneforge 4 too. In Shaper Monarch's holding cell is a captured shaper. I think it is the same one from Geneforge 3. -It sounds like he has become Pro-Trakovite.

  4. I use the Shock Trooper to smack the enemy from behind with batons and gems. I have always played my shapers this way in previous games. I never have enough essence to cast spells after I make my creations.

P.S. The graphic is a Shock trooper holding a baton.

  5. I like the idea and have thought about it in the past. This idea would work best as its own simulation game (just like the Sims). I remember the mansion from Avernum 3 and it had a novelty value.

However, I would rather not be bothered with it when I'm solving the last plot point. Or, have it lost in an earlier area. This may work in its own game but not in Geneforge 5.

  6. The world of Geneforge is as big or small as you want to imagine. I'd imagine it is very much bigger though since crossing a zone on foot is sometimes refered to as a days journey.

I'd guess the Shaper's main continent would be many hundreds of zones across. I don't think it is even fully colonized because they are still building colonies and shaping plant forms that haven't spread across the world yet. I'm guessing "middle ages" population levels, small pockets of population centers, and many miles of wilderness.
