What is this a resistance against, exactly?

Increasing STR makes melee attacks hit more often and do more damage. How does this work for characters like sorcerers who don't use melee weapons? Are their attacks by their staffs considered melee for "Attributes" purposes?

I thought 1. I had to choose which two team members I wanted to bring with me. 2. I had to do that when leaving the Black Fortress.
