  1. No disrespect intended. I really appreciate the help. I had gone there but couldn't get in, then completely forgot about it.

Anyway, it's Stud as rhyming with "dude". Funny how the "frolicking" guy heard something different.

Just kidding, I've known you both from the forums for a long time now and you both seem quite decent. Your table manners on the other hand...

  2. I've played through twice so far, as a singleton Infiltrator and as a Lifecrafter. The Lifecrafter battle with Monarch was much easier for me but more than doable for the Infiltrator. Granted I played the second game as a lifecrafter who knew he had to spend enormous amounts of skill points on leadership and mechanics to make places like that easier. Ahem, but I digress...

As an Infiltrator, Monarchs pit and Matala were simply too frustrating for me. My lifecrafter made it through both pretty well though.

Jeff, thanks for a great game in the great Spiderweb tradition.

Edit: Yes I know Matala and the pits are optional. I just wanted to share my experience.

  3. Ah, the pillars were good. Looks like a little trash pile on the floor behind them. Still, I was checking along the walls so I never would have got it on my own. In the breeding pits I was sure I checked there but I guess not. I should have used a lantern maybe. That is one very dark place.

This would have been the second game that I missed them as I was just about to finish up. I would have gone on thinking that Jeff put these unopenable rooms in the game just to torment me and everyone else who hates unopenable rooms. But he didn't and I regret cursing him repeatedly. For the rooms anyway.

Thanks to you guys for straightening me out and making a great game even more enjoyable.

  4. Thanks all. I must be blind to have missed so many levers. Now for the treat (I hope) of going back and seeing what's behind those doors.

In the original Geneforge, was it said that the ancient civilization were the Shapers ancestors? I don't remember off hand.

  5. I couldn't find a way in there also. There were two other doors, in the breeding pits SE, Matala's NE, I couldn't find a way through either.

I thought that Kryk's door might reference something in the next Geneforge. Remember the ancient civilization in Geneforge 1? I keep waiting for them to make another appearance.

  6. I don't know how to create a game like this but would it be that difficult to lower the costs of leadership and mechanics since one needs such high levels to make the game less frustrating. Or to make the warrior more effective vis a vis the infiltrator.

The usual scramble for experience points is particulary frustrating in GF4. There are simply not enough. I kept waiting for that feeling of mastery I had achieved in the earlier GF series and it just never happened. So while GF4 is a really great game overall, it feels like a real uphill battle to get your character where you want him to be. And in the end you never do. At least that's my experience.

  7. I also think this is one of the best games that Jeff has created. He definitely listened to our comments and concerns about the earlier Geneforge series and he made changes to address them. I hope he will scan the boards and maybe consider some revisions to Geneforge 4 also. While the game is really good there are a few things that could be changed to make it just more satisfying to play.

Having said that though, I just want to thank Jeff for compelling me to buy his game and leaving me feeling guilty for not paying much more. Thanks Jeff.

  8. Synergy, Yes, I've seen Startuckers work. Incredible as well.

I still don't like the idea of pinning all my tool use on my mage. She's still only a level 17 in mage spells with items. How much less would she be if I diverted all those skill points to tool use.

And what about the thief character? Where does he fit in? Make him a mage as well?

Anyway, I gave you and Thuryl a saintly rating which I think both of you deserve. Spiderwebbers who help one another deserve to be thanked.

  9. Thuryl, I do indeed have my skills split between PCs. 13 on my Slith for tool use including help from the tinkers gloves and bauble, so his base is really 10. And all my mage skills on my, um, mage. Thanks for saying what's behind the door. At level 36 I don't need that anymore.

Synergy, thank you for your insights. I can't imagine the amount of work you must do to calculate your stats. It's much appreciated.
