You'll need to download the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit.

Launch the 32-bit version, create a new custom database, then a new application fix. Navigate to the affected game executable, select it, and then, on the second page of fixes, look for "ForceDirectDrawEmulation."

To make sure the fix stays, right-click the database and select "Install" which will apply the fixes when you launch the game outside the Compatibility Administrator.

I can confirm that this works.

This fixed slowdown entirely for me, even in the menu screens.

They really should maybe sticky this fix in the "Avernum 4" strategy thread or on the steam forums or something as this seems to be a common problem.

Why this hasn't been stickied yet I don't know, but thank you so much Nim for posting this. It required some digging and clicking of links to get to this (aka: I read the thread and clicked a link to another thread), but I figured I'd post this fix that seems to work. This apparently works for Geneforge 1,2, and 3 as well as Avernum 4.

  2. Hi. I was in the middle of an Avernum 4 runthrough when I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. I did a fresh install of the OS too, not the upgrade as I've had issues with that before (and I had to boy windows 10 anyway since my win 7 was... *cough* not authentic). On windows 7 the game ran flawlessly. However, after I began using windows 10 Avernum 4 (and avernum 4 only, every other avernum game runs fine) runs so slow its as if I was trying to use a commodore 64 to play it. Its completely unplayable. things that should only take a couple of seconds now take 30 to 40 seconds.

My computer has the following hardware:

3.9 GHZ AMD FX 6350 6 core processor (socket AM3+)

    12 GB System Ram PC3 10660 DDR3

    2 GB (GDDR5) video ram Geforce 760 GTX (PCI-E 16X)

500 GB Maxtor Hard drive SATA2

    1 TB Seagate HDD SATA2

    BDrom/DVDRW/CDRW combo drive

    Asus M5A97 Motherboard

Thermaltake 700 Watt ATX power supply

    Logitech G110 keyboard

    Roccat Kone Pure mouse

copy and pasted from another website, hense the odd formatting.

Any help would be appreciated, I'd love to finish A4 before starting A5.

  3. I took some time to try a fresh install and even started a new game and still get the same slowdown issues. I also installed Avernum 5 and tried that. Avernum 5 works perfectly. So I guess worst case scenario I can skip A4 for now, but I'd much rather play the games in order if someone can figure something out for me. Thanks to everyone who reads this. (I've already beaten and loved Avernum 1,2, and 3.)

  4. I don't think we're talking about the same version of the game here. Keep in mind A4, 5, and 6 have not been remade since the mid 2000s (which technically was the first time they were made at all I think. Avernum 1,2,3 were originally Exile 1,2,3 in the 90s, but no 4,5,6 existed till the first remake.).

The picture I linked to is what is in my A4 folder.

  5. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and am in the middle of an Avernum 4 playthrough. I have 2 computers, my laptop and desktop. Both are relatively high end and can play pretty much any AAA game out there. With windows 7 I was having a bit of lag whenever I'd hold Tab down (to show names and stuff), but otherwise the game played smoothly and rather fast. Upon upgrading to windows 10 it runs so slowly that it feels like I'm trying to play the game on a 486 or something (and honestly it might run better on that processor). Its so slow that it takes about 10 seconds from the time I press esc till the menu pops up. Everything works, but its so slow that it has become unplayable. Combat takes about 5 to 7 times longer than it should, as well as moving around, or even trying to save the game. The mouse cursor also suffers from severe cursor lag. This is happening on both of my computers, hense why I think this is related to windows 10. If anyone has a fix please let me know.

My desktop stats are as follows:

3.9 GHZ AMD FX 6350 6 core processor

    12 GB of system ram PC3 10660

    2 GB GDDR5 Geforce 760 GTX

My laptop stats are as follows:

2.0 GHZ Intel core i7 dual core

    8 GB of system ram PC3 12800

    2 GB GDDR3 Geforce 840M

I really want to finish playing the Avernum games. Please fix the slowdown issues Spiderweb! This is for Avernum 4 version 1.0.1 from GoG.com.

  6. I have to say that I love these RPGs as well. Avernum really feels like a real world to me. I mean... I know its not cause talking lizards and stuff, but it FEELS real! So well fleshed out. Avernum is my favorite RPG series out of all of the ones I've played from Ultima to Final Fantasy to The Witcher and others.

  7. Why have your second fighter be fourth, rather than second? That seems unusual.

Exactly what Nikki said. I ended up losing my mage once to a really easy fight early on in the first game. Ever since then I decided to seperate my melee fighters with one in the front and one in the rear with my 2 spellcasters in the middle. Oh I still die sometimes, but I do a lot better with them seperated like that.

  8. After finally beating the entirety of the first trilogy (now working on avernum 4!) I have a party set up that I love to do. Obviously for avernum 1 everyone has to be human, but here is my typical set up.

Slith melee fighter with a pole weapon.

Human priest using a melee weapon and shield

Nephil mage using a bow. melee slot doesn't matter, but I like to find something defensive if its an option.

Either slith or human melee fighter with a regular melee weapon. Either 2 handed sword or sword and board.

The mage will also be the one who has tool use skill. Everything else like arcane lore and nature/ cave lore is able to be split throughout the party so I usually do so now that I know this ^_^.

I haven't come across one fight that I couldn't handle after enough strategizing with this makeup.
