Does anybody miss

Recommended Posts

I can't say there is a single graphical 'upgrade' made in the Geneforge series that I have agreed with completely. It's not necessarily that all the new ones are worse than the old ones, but it does negate the nostalgia feeling when suddenly a creation you've been shaping for years doesn't look the same anymore. I also don't really like the new shaper graphic, the old one was far more iconic and, interestingly, is still used in splash screen and endings art. I wonder how that happened.

Edit: One change I wouldn't be opposed to would be a new drakon graphic. The old one doesn't look that great anyway and drakons are, after all, the one creation that actually does claim to be changing with every new generation.

Now see, I though the old ones' cylindrical helmets were iconic as well, and I was surprised by the change.

I agree with Dikiyoba about the spawners. Didn't descriptions from Geneforge 1 specifically mention the tendrils picking up the essence in the nearby pool? Now the tendrils are gone. Where do the creations come from? Do they shoot out of the hole on the top?

The new fyoras, thahds, and battle alphas themselves don't bother me so much. If the new ones had been the old ones and vice versa my complaint would be the same (negated nostalgia).

I definitely do not miss the old thahds. Depending on the angle at which they were standing, you could get quite a view (ahem.)

P.S. By the way, if you haven't spotted any nudity in older Spiderweb games, look very, very closely at either the creatures (early Geneforge) or the illustrations (early Avernum.) I also noticed a bit of violence that slipped by in Blades of Avernum--severed body parts in the corner of an illustration for Diplomacy with the Dead , and a head-splitting-open graphic when you kill a zombie. One wonders how many innocent little children were scarred for life grin

The stone servants looked almost exactly like the thahds in G3-4 except they were upright. The G1-2 thahd should of been in Nethergate being that they are naked. The G3-4 one looks like it is disfugured with a ba-donk-a-donk. That's why I 'm getting my hopes up for the new stone sercant graphic to be the Thahd's graphic.

Yes, but reusing the art assets allows Jeff to get the game out that much quicker. If he had to create new art for everything (or at least the important stuff) it would delayt the release of the game considerably.

Although, yes, the duplicate art is kinda annoying.

Even if I only made it about 5 min into A4 (the controls were just too different. I was used to the semi-realtime walking around in Geneforge, and the one-hex at a time of A4 was kinda wierd to me.)

-_-

Edit: Spelling error.

Xelgion and Ackrovan: this is transparently not true, and you know it. Please stop. If you really have a problem, you can send a private message to *i about it.

I'm not locking this thread, because most of the thread has been productive. But if you're gonna keep spreading your negativity, locks will start appearing.

Vlish don't taze people silly.

We deliver feisty tentacle slaps of pain and occasionally slurp delicious brains out through their nostrils.

Oh, and occasionally, we like to watch human appendage porn.

Now stop taunting the mods, before I am forced to release a box of Almarian face leaping spiders. You wouldn't like that at all.

I feel sorry for the shaper that has to be present for alpha breeding.

Having looked it up, it doesn't specifically say that high control is needed during the breeding period, just that they need high control and they can reproduce. I assumed that meant the control was needed constantly. Letting a few alphas go rogue and get away could be problematic whether they were currently capable of breeding or not.

Dikiyoba.

It's do not insult, torment and/or provoke the moderators. It's stll too warm to insulate the moderators for winter, except for Alorael who should have done so himself.

I never noticed it before, but "vlish" sounds like it could be an onomatopoeia, and not a pretty one. And it's definitely one that I want to insulate myself against.

—Alorael, who is pretty sure that human appendages are analogues to tentacle monsters in general. It's not the noodly appendages you have to watch out for.
