DragonHighLord
In an effort to experiment (to see if I liked it), I made a servile focusing on missile skills. So I used the money cheat so I could buy unlimited javelins and I liked playing that way.. went thru almost all the demo using batons and javelins... so I think I would like to play this, I'll start a new game and never use any cheat, just have the stuff I find, and whatever money I would spend on spells use on ammo.. is there enough ammo to go around focusing on nothing but that or will I be disappointed about 1/2 way through when this ammo starts to run out? -x-OMEN-x-
I have found that, unlike most geneforges, G4 enemies dont really drop many javelins. So i would say that the ammo WILL get scare as you get to the end of the game
Dikiyoba
Wands and crystals are also based on your missile skill, so don't forget to use those. Dikiyoba.
Randomizer
There should be enough missle items between found and buying the better ones at the end. I never tried it, but found plenty to sell during the game.
Evnissyen
Javelins make nice damage in the beginning but, as time goes on, I don't quite remember if the thorn batons aren't better. (At any rate: easier to supply.) I tried playing with a thorn baton character, once, and soon dropped it.
Student of Trinity
I haven't tried it in G4 yet, but in all the earlier games baton specialists can be great. You have to keep pumping Dex and Missiles, you have to spend your ammo wisely, and you have to move around in order to gun down your enemies one by one without getting swarmed. And you have to do without much in the way of non-missile abilities, because if you put enough points into anything else to make much difference in the late game, your missile weapons will stop making a difference. But the challenge of making it work out is a good way to revive your interest in a game you've played through a few times already. I had a lot of fun with a 'gunslinger' Guardian named Roland in G1 and G2, and Delicious Vlish reported that G3 was great, too. Some of the game changes in G4 might work against thornflingers, though, so someone should report on this.
Gandalf the Purple
I always have a bunch to sell, and I don't even pick them all up, so I would say you probably won't have to much trouble finding ammo. P.S.- The AP rule change is going to be VERY detrimental to a missile character
Evnissyen
Remind me how action points are being altered? I hope it's not to reduce the our ability to make multiple missile attacks? I prefer the ability to use throwing crystals more than once per turn, and the ability to drink a potion and then attack in the same round. Granted it doesn't make much sense, but it makes potions and crystals more attractive as last-resort tools.
Sudanna
Action points already have been altered so you can attack once per turn, with any number of APs.
Evnissyen
With crystals you can attack multiple times per turn.
Dikiyoba
Before G4, you needed 5 AP to attack. If you had less than that, your turn would end. That meant missile specialists could just run a few steps and shoot each turn while melee monsters chased after them with no chance to get a hit in. Dikiyoba. Evnissyen
Even before G4: With fewer than 5 AP you can attack with a crystal.
Student of Trinity
Yes, this makes it a lot harder to fight tough opponents as a thornflinger. But I think it could still be doable. The whole point of playing such a specialist is to pump your skills enough to make one-shot kills of most enemies, so if you can do this you can still thin out a pack gradually by careful positioning. The one you shot would always be able to reach you, but if it dies, the one behind it may be just out of melee closing distance. And for tougher enemies there are crystals, which with high missile skills do serious damage. So it might be okay. Interesting to try, anyway. Randomizer
As long as you raise mental magic to daze and the higher versions, you can deal with most swarms. You may have to retreat to keep some from attacking.
