UncleGeorge
Hello there. So, I find myself bored these day with the lack of interesting PC release and with my Xbox 360 in reparation I find myself wondering what I could do to kill time, earlier today I stumbled upon a old PCGamer issue of a couple years ago refering to Geneforge as a good RPG game for those who waren't looking for the top next gen graphics engine.. So here I am, I want to give Geneforge a shot but I would like to know, should I start with Geneforge 1 or if I'm better off with the latest Geneforge? Is the gameplay improved from one version to the other or it pretty much stay the same and do I need to know the whole backstory of the previous games to enjoy the latest installment? Or hell, is the Avernum serie a better place to start at? Thanks for the help
Sudanna
If you want the full story, start with G1. You don't have to, by any means. The Geneforges can be played completely out of order, and you won't miss much. Gameplay is very much improved from the original. If you don't want to buy all the games - Nalyd doesn't blame you, it's expensive - Nalyd would recommend getting G4. Or, if you don't mind waiting much longer, G5 is in beta right now. Wisdom
If you enjoy Geneforge then you should start at the begining. While it's true, you can play them out of order you might want to start at the begining for other reasons. If you started with g4 and moved back to g1 later you would notice graphical changes, and maybe some features that you would have been more comfortable having. Stick with it, if you don't like the graphics, the story will pull you in.

Randomizer
There is a month long sale of Spiderweb products so if you like the demos, then this is a good time to buy. Also there is a discount for buying the first 3 games together.
Tre'zar
Personally, I love both the Avernum and Geneforge series, but if you are interested in the story-line and such you might want to start with the first Geneforge. Like Yelbis said, you don't have to play the first one to understand everything in the story. Avernum is also one of my favorites. Play the demo for both games and see what you want to start with first.
Feo Takahari
Look through the old topics--there've been posts on this subject before. Also, if you're considering Avernum, take a look at the topic "Favorite Avernum?"
AnarhIztok2511
If you'd like a joy that will last, I advise you to buy all and start from the beginning - as said, if you buy the first three together (as a TRIOLOGY) there's a significant discount. Arori4
Finishing the Geneforge series 1 through 4 would be satisfying. I've played Geneforge 4 the most, about 7 times, and I've noticed a few things that Geneforge 4 has that existed in the preceding games. Basicallly, starting from the beginning would give you a clear picture of the whole storyline, but any order would still give you a good understanding. FabledOne
It also depends on how OCD you are about doing things in order. I can't stand playing games out of order. My main reason is that I like to keep the in line with the story, and seeing how it changes/evolves through out the series. Jeff did an excellent job at making it so you don't have to play the whole series, but there are some things that are funny when you know about them. Like when they are telling the story of GF1 in GF4, how Trajkov used the GF to show the shapers how insane and dangerous it was.
