Grrr unstable mass!

Recommended Posts

I bloody hate those things!

I found one near Exodus, thought I could take it, evidently I couldn't. Neither could the town militia, or the miners.

I think by the time I gave up and used the editor I had killed around 40 and been killed about 10-15 times. I uber-buffed my party and went to finish them off. There were still about another 30 to do. Those things split like mad!

Thing is I can't return my party to normal frown Talk about a pain eh?

Sorry for the rant I just wanted to tell people who understood. Anyone else been utterly swamped by something in A5?

Yup. Unstable Mass is a HUGE pain when you first encounter one of 'em, because chances are you're far too low a level to take one on at that point. Once you've got a good collection of buffs and spells and summonables, and your party can deal high damage per round, and maybe a little more trial and error to get it right, you'll be set. With practice, even the Doomguard will be a pretty trivial matter (well, on Normal difficulty anyway, with a full party).

er, I always found it best to
a) try to hide so only one or two can attack at a time,
and
B) the exact opposite of lightning spray - concentrate all damage on ONE at a time, so you only get one split per turn
(but then, I wasn't dazing. I should try that some day if I play again. or in av6)

The thing I found is, with the unstable masses, make sure and always hit them equally so when they split you don't have two with high health . It may take time, but as long as you have a capable healer and good area effect mage spells, you should be able to take them down.

Daze is the best thing since they can't split if they are dazed on their action. Next is slow to keep one from attacking all the time. Concentrate on attacking only one and daze repeatedly. It helps to have the highest damaging fighter attack it, but you can kill one with a bonding knife (low damage weapon) as long as you can keep it from splitting too much.

Bad? That was fun! (Then again, I'm on Normal, dunno 'bout you). Took me forever too, but I finally realized just how useful shades are against the Horror - their extremely accurate, damaging, and weakening attacks were a lovely addition to an otherwise underpowered party at level 14. I could just go on and on about how much fun Khora-Vysss was. laugh

Edit: The lesson to be learned from this thread, it seems, is "Work smart, not hard."

I'm just running through the demo and knocked out one in the lowlands without too much difficulty. It didn't even split 10 times. I just blessed the party, shielded 'em, hasted 'em, and then I focused all my efforts on the main blob, occasionally summoning and poisoning the thing. Sucker went down without too much problem.

The spell level isn't nearly as important as the amount of Mage Spells, Magery and Spellcraft skill you have.

The problem I had with the unstable mass was that I couldn't control where the copies went. Out in the open in the Drake Pillars, I could get swarmed quickly if my Daze spell didn't work. It tried to butt them up against the nearby wall (the one with the goblin encounter), where I could use some rocks and stalagmites to my advantage.

I would have tried clearing the goblins out of the room and leading the mass to the single-space corridor, but I didn't like having nowhere to run in case things still got out of hand. With the outside wall, I could still cut and run for town.
