Snuffy
Kept running into walls *thump-splat* and thought I'd give the forums a try. Tons of info here! After wandering a while thought I'd register. Will probably have more ?'s than answers. Still haven't gotten caught up on all the reading. Snuffy Originally written by John S: Mr. Snuffy, just an FYI: starting a thread whose general gist is "Hey, I'm new! I'm having a lot of fun!" is, around here, like an invitation to some people to post an insufferable and unfunny meme. So watch out. Sorry to ruin the thread, but I want to get in before they can strike again. You didn't ruin anything. Led to some interesting reading: meem/ n. [coined by analogy with `gene', by Richard Dawkins] An idea considered as a replicator, esp. with the connotation that memes parasitize people into propagating them much as viruses do. Used esp. in the phrase `meme complex' denoting a group of mutually supporting memes that form an organized belief system, such as a religion. This lexicon is an (epidemiological) vector of the `hacker subculture' meme complex; each entry might be considered a meme. However, `meme' is often misused to mean `meme complex'. Use of the term connotes acceptance of the idea that in humans (and presumably other tool- and language-using sophonts) cultural evolution by selection of adaptive ideas has superseded biological evolution by selection of hereditary traits. Hackers find this idea congenial for tolerably obvious reasons. Sounds much like inner city gangs are memes. High School populars, nerds, freaks, geeks, jocks, and so forth are all examples of memes. Conclusion, memes are essentially part of being human. Some are good, some harmful. In this context it sounds kind of Nazi, or elitist to me. Or maybe just immature. Randomizer
The topic has been diverted from a "hello" to an intellectual discussion. This may prove interesting. You are one of the few that actually read the old topics. Congratulations on possessing an intelligence.

Dikiyoba
To clear up some of the confusion, Spiderweb's standard greeting for new members is "Welcome to Spiderweb Software, leave your sanity at the door.", because Spiderweb is host to fluffy turtles whose favorite food is sanity. Snuffy
Ahhh. Thank you. Those poor fuzzy turtles may find lean pickings with my sanity.
