Mav
After a bunch of fruitless searching I finally found the hidden entrance to the Giant's Spire. Just wondering, and a non-spoiler answer is just fine, whether I have to help out Highground's mayor before I get the "secret word" to enter without having to turn the whole area hostile. Since the Giant's Spire is a major landmark in that area I figured I could still find my way in and negotiate/sidequest/fight my way around in there before choosing loyalties between Muck and Highground, but I have to say, I like how Jeff subtly prods the player into picking sides. Thanks in advance for the help.
Randomizer
While the Giant's Spire lower level won't all be hostile, I don't think you can get to go upstairs without the Highground Mayor's quest. There is a gate to a part you need that I think only opens when you have the quest and do something else. With high enough party combined strength, somewhere over 30, you can open the main level gate from a wheel in a secret area. This is only useful if you are doing it as combat for Muck and don't want to help Highground.
Mav
Thanks. As for the secret area, I'm not sure if my party will have a combined strength of 30 until the _late_ game at least. Guess I'll have to deviate from my typical role-playing strategy and see if I can play both sides. Or maybe I'll explore the Barrier Passage a bit more and see what else there is to see. Lilith
It's possible to play both sides by ordering the giant queen to attack Muck, reporting to Highground and the Vahnatai (who also want Muck out, in case you didn't already know), and then killing the giant queen and reporting it to Muck. Randomizer
I wound up using 2 girdles of might and 2 talismans of might (crafted in Muck) to increase my strength plus I had Gladwell's geas for 16 extra party strength.
Evnissyen
Actually, it is possible to get upstairs without the Highground quest. Apparently the crazy shaman woman (can a female giant technically be called a woman?) only locks the gate and pockets the key if they know you're coming. I simply went in, slaughtered everyone (the lifts do still have be 'fixed'), and found the gate wide open. Then I went back to Muck, killed the killer cats from Highground who were spying on me, claimed the reward from Muck and then went to Highground (who, for some reason, didn't get the news and therefore weren't hostile to me), claimed the mayor's quest and then disappointed her with the news that I'd just slaughtered the Queen, and gained an exciting 12 XP... and still the place didn't become hostile. Honestly, though: killing giants, I think, is a little easier than it should be. I mean, really: Giants are huge! And powerful. Their only physical disadvantage is that they don't wear armor. Anyway... I do have two questions... one is whether or not the wheel-closed chamber in the upper level under the spire is accessible by any other means (my guess is no)... the other is how I can get the button out front to open the secret room. It says I know it shoudl do something but I don't know how to make it work... and, of course, on the automap I can see there's something hidden... so with those two things together I'm guessing it can't be just a teaser. Randomizer
Highground doesn't go hostile whatever you do with the Giant Queen. Certain levers don't open secret areas if your tool use is too low. I've gone and listed TU ranges when I come across a place like that. There is a hidden area on the main level of Giant's Spire outside the main gate that opens to a wheel to open that gate (it needs a lot of parry strength). There is a wheel on the highest tier of the lower level that needs a lot of party strenght to open a storage room.
