Geneforge 4: "Not a Shaper"

Recommended Posts

Where I was disappointed that GF3 only really had two factions and you had to join one of them in the end in a pretty "Black/white" kinda option. I enjoyed the game but, I liked the idea of joining multiple different factions and everyone wanting me to join thier cause, though at the same time, it was sortof... "You are a shaper, but you are different" etc... even if you were a loyal shaper I got into the Drayk camp in GF2 so... if your a loyal shaper, and everyone already knows it in that valley, it'd be nice for me to get shot on site the first time, not the second time entering. Anyways. I hope GF4 has a somewhat newish engine, and the shaper part of it and creating creations are still around. I enjoy creating a horde of minions to go out and do my evil deeds while I stood near the entrance commanding them from far away.

i dont play geneforge, but its development interests me.

since most people agree that jeff messed avernum 4 up, and most bad features came from geneforge, id like to see whether geneforge 4 stays quite much the same, like spidweb-games tend to do, or it really changes to the better. then i might buy it. i like the basic idea. always have.

ps: no offense, great spiderweb-masters, i love all of you and your products, but hey, there you go.

It's funny, because in the end text of G1 (if you play pro-Shaper) the surviving Sholai (the ones who don't use canisters) meet with the Shapers, the two cultures interact, and your character actually goes to Sholai lands.
Maybe you do in Geneforge 4. Think..... Ghaldring and his forces have been forced out of the Shaper world and fled North over the sea. This time the Shapers are even more determined to destroy the rebels once and for all so they follow Ghaldring. Ghaldring and his army finally hit land..... the Sholai land. Shapers, led by the Shaper in G1, land soon after and find that Ghaldring has built another empire in the Sholai lands splitting the country in two. The Shapers build up a base to fight the rebels and half the Sholai join them to help. The other half joins the rebels. Then in this strange new land a new war begins.

You are a young Sholai in a destroyed village. You must flee to the nearby neutural Sholai city. Their you can choose your path.

The factions are
- Rebel Sholai - like the Barzites

- Shapers - Shapers and some Sholai

- Loyalist Sholai - Sholai against everybody except themselves and neutral Sholai & Shapers

- Rebels - must I explain?

- Awakened - must I explain?

I don't think there's any consensus on A4. Some like the GF-style graphics and different interface/spell system/town-outdoor management/etc. Some don't. Some like parts and dislike parts.

My personal feeling is meh to the interface. The spells and skills are probably a small improvement.

But in any case, A4 is selling like mad, apparently, so I'm guessing that Jeff is interpreting customer response to A4 as positive, whatever that may mean for GF4.

Because your PC starts the game as a novice. If there hadn't been a disaster of some sort, then the skilled NPCs would be able to resolve the plot without your help. It's a plot device, which Jeff uses often.

To give him credit though, GF2 and Nethergate don't use the 'disaster' scenario. GF1 does, but it does so in a slightly different way (the disaster occurred long before your visit).

Nick concurs. Nick decides to refer to himself in the third person, and wishes to remind people here that he has yet to play Geneforge 3.

The Sholai are the best development of the series; they are their own isolated society, and not like a sect (of independent creations) but indifferent. What they want to do, as Masha says in the first Geneforge, is make peace and trade with other cultures. I can see the Shapers Council learning of the Sholai and deciding to seek them out and dominate their culture; supporting evidence includes the end of Geneforge, in which the Council is pleased that you wiped out the Sholai (if you did).

It's interesting how the story is open to many endings, but one must be chosen for a sequel. Also, the PC's in each game are unrelated, and they clearly have at least a few years between each game. Basically, the "chosen" plot, as I've read it, goes something like this:

The apprentice on Sucia Island returns to the Shaper Council, having destroyed the Geneforge and left each sect alive. The Council send Zakary and Barzahl to investigate, and they end up settling Drypeak (and the countless areas beyond), where the Takers and Awakened migrate. The Obeyers are either absorbed back into Shaper The (Neo) Takers eventually build another Geneforge -- suggesting that decades have passed, with all the buildings etc up there -- and nobody manages to use it. Meanwhile, Lord Whatsisface is hidden away gathering power. The next apprentice goes to the mountains and learns of all this, comes back and reports it. The Barzite ending includes domination over the Shapers, so that couldn't happen. The Awakened ending suggests diplomacy between the Serviles and Shapers. Nick forgot the Taker ending, so the assumption is that the loyalist ending works out again.

Correct me if I'm wrong?

Your frame of reference is somewhat skewed. Your ship sinking may be a personal tragedy but it is far short of a disaster. Whereas the abandonment of Sucia island is clearly a disaster for the serviles and other creations left behind. And ultimately for the shapers themselves, as it turns out.

Clearly, I understood your statement differently than you did. My reasoning was there had to be a disaster to put a novice on the island, and that was the sinking living ship. The centuries-old disaster is the disaster that starts the whole Geneforge series. So yes, it is a disaster (and a huge one at that) but in a greater sense than just needing to stick a novice on an island.

Changing subjects, Dikiyoba doesn't mind if Nick Ringer speaks in third person, as long as Nick has a valid reason besides mockery (Nick isn't required to say what it is, as long as Nick has one), does it in a slightly different way than all other third-person speakers, and does it consistently. If Nick can't do that, Nick should use first-person, second-person, or ninth-person.

Edit: Fixed quote, changed sig.

A little off topic, maybe, but I quite enjoy the whole plot-line and philosophy of Geneforge. What with the whole Shapers creating the creations, then them gaining setinence and wanting freedom yet the shapers denying it of them. I hope this continues in some really awesome way in G4... Say what... no offense but I dont' remember your name said above, the Shapers go and try to take over the Sholai's, but say... a bit more underhanded threw manipulation, and the Rebels are a part of it trying to continue the war that the shapers are experiencing on thier mainland there, both trying to get more support from the Sholai. the main character, which will likely start off alone through disaster, or on a mission for someone high up in some society, sholai maybe to give more perspective on their views, and then go from there... somehow allowing the Main Character freedom to do on there own. Anyways... Regardless of the interface, I do hope that the plot will make-up for it, though a horrible interface would likely deter many from playing... but I doubt he'd screw it up that badly.

I don't know about you, but playing through the eyes of someone other than a Shaper was something I had thought up a while ago with a Servile-halfling I created for a Geneforge fanfic. cool

And now that (as of now) you can play as a human or a SERVILE, I can finally play as my long-imagined character. laugh And I hope the Awakened come back. I CRIED when I found out that the Awakened weren't in G3. *huggles Cryoa plushie*

And no, you can't have my plushie. I made it, it's mine, and I"m not selling. :p

Are you going to post that fanfic here? I'm sure there are people who would be interested in seeing it.

I haven't been able to write it, because I haven't been able to align any one game with the idea. Reason for that being the issue of time, I can't tell how much time passes between each game. I MIGHT be able to use Geneforge 3 and the Awakened ending of Geneforge 2 as the story base, but...I think it'd be best to wait until G4, where you can actually play as a Servile.

My luck, I'll be depending upon...ack, I can't say it, never mind.

I love this series; it's rich in story ideas, a story-writer's haven. *huggles Cryoa plushie* Of course, I was definately thinking "mind-reader" when I saw that the character in G4 wasn't going to be human. I'm definately going to be breaking the "Sig Image" rule the day it comes out for Windows...or should I buy a Mac...wow, I'm off-topic.

Nonsense. After the new Shaper graphic of G3 and the squashed profiles in the inventory screen, corruption by Avernum is the least of graphic worries.

Wait, Dikiyoba remembers something about a giant boat...

Edit: If it makes TesabilityBlack feel better, Dikiyoba clearly realized TesabilityBlack was a girl.

Ummm... Ya of course there was a sholai (spelled wrong :p ) Anyway, i wasn't all too happy when I read the "Not a Shaper" thing. If you play as a servile, Drakon, or any other shaper-made creation you will have to be on the rebels side. In other words: You have no choice for sides in Geneforge 4!

That is of course, unless you dont play as a creation... :pwinklaugh:p

Welcome to the boards. It's a funny thing about board etiquette: people will flame you for not reading old threads, but then they'll also flame you for posting in them. As a newbie you're supposed to read carefully through all the previous years' worth of brilliant commentary, and then start a new thread that refers to the old one (preferably with a link) if you want to comment on one. The reason seems to be that people don't like seeing a topic with dozens of replies suddenly appear out of the blue, only to realize that instead of an incredibly hot new topic it is just an old one revived, and the only new bit is a tiny added remark from a new member.

Well .. i think it would be cool if there are Archers in G4 like in avernum.

and i hope they dont walk like avernum charcators... they slide over the floor at Moch 4

and its so gay....

anyways.. i hope theres more charactors to choose from. its mre fun to play with more then 3 same charctors over and over doing the same biulds and stuff.

i think he mihgt make G4 bigger with maybe 100 places to go. more lasting and i hope more items and swords and weird items that makes us say i wanna own every1 who plays this..

o and that brings me to the point. he might make an Online geneforge

it would kick ass if he did. maybe a 2-4 player adventure. going around. your teamm8 exploring one place if u need help you can like message him and fight monsters together instead of alone.

my ideas.

Have you read what Jeff Vogel wrote on the subject?

Jeff has said time and time again. there will be no online Spidweb games.

The only thing interesting about playing a servile would be getting all the different continuity things in order.

Like, would a servile be able to use a discipline wand? Cause if I remember correctly from G1 (it's been a while) the Awakened had one that they refused to use because it scared them too much. But I could be wrong.

And if you could use magic, you'd have to be either a shaped servile, or one of the fanatic, crazy serviles. And as much fun as I'm sure that would be... :p

*edit* Fun being the crazy servile, I mean.
