Garrulous Glaahk Commodore Redmark
Like the planet we live on is Earth. What exactly do the people of the Empire and Avernum call their planet, or do we not really know?
Magnificent Ornk Drakefyre
Ermarian.
Garrulous Glaahk Commodore Redmark
Thats a cool name, was it ever mentioned in the Avernum games or is that something Jeff has said before? Or for all I know it could have been in the Exile games.
Magnificent Ornk Drakefyre
No, but the online Exile/Avernum community has been using it for eight years.
Garrulous Glaahk Commodore Redmark
Who created Ermarian then and what caused it to be the accepted name of the Avernum/Empire world? Did a few Exile veterans get together and, by means of forces non-veterans will never understand, come up the name?
Easygoing Eyebeast Morgan
Pretty much, yes.
Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
For the record, I hate the name "Ermarian," and I feel free to consider that purely an Exile thing that doesn't carry over to Avernum, like the Exile timelines that don't work in Avernum because Jeff changed the dates. Magnificent Ornk Drakefyre
Aran and I have been able to reconcile the Exile and Avernum timelines and worlds - what in particular are you referring to? And if you don't like it, don't use it. Jeff has managed to go through five games without giving the world a name.

Drakey, we've had this conversation at least twice before. Among the things we came up with: the dates given for the order closing the school in VoDT are different in BoE and in BoA. In Avernum, the war with Grah-Hoth was forty years before A1, while in Exile, the same war was apparently longer prior to E1. The list goes on. Magnificent Ornk Drakefyre
Yes, but this time (with the aid of your Avernum notes) we've actually finished a timeline from the First Expedition to Avernum 3 that is internally consistent (except for blatant contradictions). Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
Internally consistent, maybe, but not consistent with both of the series.
Garrulous Glaahk Tom
Earth. The name is used in Avernum 3 and I believe it may have been carried over from Exile 3, but I have no desire to play through the game again, looking for it. Magnificent Ornk Aran
Might have been a slip. Jeff, after all, is from Earth. Side note: Wiki is down right now for technical reasons. I won't be able to fix it till next weekend.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
The Exile series refers to the native language of humans as being English a couple of times as well (a note in the nephil fort in E1 and an obelisk in Vahnatai lands in E2). Don't know if this was fixed/changed for the Avernums.

Easygoing Eyebeast Thralni
Is there somebody who made complete map of this Ermarian planet? I suppose not, as all the time pieces are being made woth the BoA editor, making it a hell of a job.
Rotghroth Rhapsody Sticky
Doing a search in this forums brings up this http://www.wam.umd.edu/~kks/index.html I know there are some annotated maps somewhere, but I can't seem to find them. I've seen them for the entirety of Exile/Avernum and then for Valorim as well. Outside of Valorim, locations get fuzzy and exact positions tend to be difficult. Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
Why does the planet require a name? Maybe there is no name. Perhaps they are not even on a planet, a moon maybe.
Magnificent Ornk Aran
If you think about it for a while, you will realize that in a pre-space technology era, it does not make one bit of difference to the inhabitants (who are the ones inventing the name) whether they live on a moon or on a planet. Especially given that they quite possibly still believe their world is flat and supported by a giant tortoise. --- However, living on a moon with a very slow rate of rotation (like our moon, where night and day last two weeks each) would explain why one can cross a continent on foot in around two days. Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
Wouldn't a moon orbiting around a planet much larger than itself have horribly violent tides?

Easygoing Eyebeast Thralni
Those maps are all nice and good, but what I mean is something like a world map? Like on the first or last pages of an atlas.
Rotghroth Rhapsody Sticky
I'm pretty sure that the geography is determined, browsing through some of the old seasons of the alongside RP to the BoX Arena might give a tenative grasp of locations for the various continents. (Or at least as determined by the fan base). The world isn't entirely explored though of course... so an entire map would be difficult to construct. As for the moon theory, a planet can turn slowly as well as a moon. Take Venus for example.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
Yes, but if a planet took 5000 hours to turn like Venus does, finishing Exile 3 in 100 "days" would take a lifetime for the PCs.
Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
Are there any references in A1-A3 pertaining to what the sky actually looks like. The sun close objects etc.
Magnificent Ornk Aran
Here\'s a world map I made from rough conjecture, whole cloth and spit. Well-Actually War Trall Synergy
How we strive to put a face of reality on even our worlds of fantasy. We seek to wrap an imagined land around a real globe. We see faces and familiar objects in random ink blots. We instinctively recoil from the abstract and the unknowable. It's just a bit curious, doncha think? This has been... Random Wry Observation #537b.

Well yeah, but it could be a compromise between the two. I was just illustrating that it didn't have to be a moon to turn slowly. Perhaps 200 hour days, or somewhere from 200-1000. *pokes the happy fun ball*

Garrulous Glaahk Chief Spider watching The Simpsons
Well, it doesn't seem to take 200 hours while walking around outside! Or does it? Some of those distances outdoors are pretty screwed up. How many months are there? Suncome, Icefall, Leaf-fall, Empire, Radiane, Rememberance, Frost, any more? And don't the months generally have 40 days?
Rotghroth Rhapsody Sticky
Eh, I don't think we were talking real time, or is there actually a time system in place... I don't remember one.

Garrulous Glaahk Chief Spider watching The Simpsons
Does that mean people age faster? Oh, and I'm pretty sure that at least some months go on for more than 28 days, because once I was just waiting and waiting for the next month to come, and it went past 31, and went all the way to about 38 or 40.
