newbie: any way to heal while wandering??

So I just left town, had one battle, some of my party are injured.  I don't see a "REST" button, walking around doesn't heal, returning to town doesn't heal...  Is there some healing option that I'm missing here?  Or is this just how the game goes?

Most towns have a bed somewhere you can rest, but the primary way to heal hp is to stop by a fort. Forts will heal your party to full hp and energy when you enter them.

You can heal before you exit the fight. Once it's been won, do your healing, then end the fight. When you end the fight you often get back some energy points, depending on the enemy; this will sometimes offset the energy you spent on healing. That's assuming you have a healing spell; you can also use healing potions, but you don't get them back until you visit a fort or sleep.

To add to Mechalibur & Raptor's thoughts, in general it's better to step inside a fort rather than sleep as less game time will pass (8 hours vs whatever amount of time it would take to walk to a fort & back to where you were).  Not a huge deal, but cumulatively it can add up to a few 'lost' days.

Although that really only matters if you're going for the achievement to finish within 100 days. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter how much time passes.
