Spore baton?

How do you use the spore baton to defuse the mines?  I can't equip it, so I can't use it as a weapon.

You can use it in your pack. Click the special ability button and then just select it. Or, put it in the quick action bar by clicking the slot you want to put it in and then selecting it.

Assuming you have the right baton (usually green or grey, but rarely red), a good trick to maximize the # of mines you can defuse is to into combat mode (w/ grid mapping on) and figure out how close you can get to the most of them while remaining 5 spaces away. They'll start to trigger at 4 spaces.
