Fledgling Fyora TogashiDeckard Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I've tried the Avernum games, and really they just didn't catch my interest at all like the Exile games did, which I LOVED. I know they can be played on 64 bit systems, but what's easiest? Assuming it takes a process to get it working, can I get a walk-through? Thanks! Quote
Unflappable Drayk adc. Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 idk, maybe DosBox would work, it's what people use to play ES:Arena on Windows 8 other than that, I have no idea. Lilith is here too ;_; Quote
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 DosBox woulda been my suggestion as well, actually. VirtualBox is apparently also an option. Either way, you'll want to install an older version of Windows under it and use that to run the Exile games. Quote
Fledgling Fyora TogashiDeckard Posted July 12, 2014 Author Posted July 12, 2014 While I can theoretically do that, I'd have to find said old version of Windows, and successfully install something in DOS... It's been probably a good 20 years since I've really used DOS. Quote
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 freedos is free and its ms-dos compatible and you don't need older Windows than XP to run 16-bit progs (Windows 3.11 is other option but not that easy to get anywhere except on ebay maybe unless wants to trust on abandonware-sites (can't give links since those are against forum rules) and quick proper search gives you links). Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I tried it at one point and can confirm that Exile runs on Windows 3.1 under DosBox. Quote
Unflappable Drayk Alex Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I got Exile to work in Wine inside a Linux VM on Windows. adc. 1 Quote
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Although it mostly worked when I tried it on Wine on my Mac, the automap in Exile 1 and 2 didn't display. Using Wine in a Linux VM seems a bit silly though. Quote
Ineffable Wingbolt BMA Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I got Exile to work in Wine inside a Linux VM on Windows. Having food by putting the spoon into your mouth after taking it all the way around the back of your neck. adc. 1 Quote
Unflappable Drayk adc. Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I got Exile to work in Wine inside a Linux VM on Windows. That made my day xD An emulated program, inside an emulator, the emulator emulated by another emulator. Quote
Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 That made my day xD An emulated program, inside an emulator, the emulator emulated by another emulator. Strictly speaking, Wine is not an emulator. Quote
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 You should probably have Windows running in Parallels/Fusion under OS X, ideally on a Hackintosh. —Alorael, who will give lots of bonus points if instead of running a PC someone implements OS X on Minecraft. Which should also be run on an emulator on a VM, of course. Quote
Garrulous Glaahk Vexivero Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I've tried the Avernum games, and really they just didn't catch my interest at all like the Exile games did, which I LOVED. I know they can be played on 64 bit systems, but what's easiest? Assuming it takes a process to get it working, can I get a walk-through? Thanks! I feel the exact same way. Exile is just better than Avernum. I've tried doing this before only to quit in frustration, but I finally got the exile games to install and run on dosbox with perfect graphics and sound after hours of failures using windows 3.1. This may sound sad, but this is the best day in a long time for me! Time to go nerd out —Vexivero, who still recalls that Sunday in July when he finally got Exile to play on Dosbox. After multiple failed attempts, it was extremely gratifying, and one month later he is still playing them. Quote
