Rotghroth Rhapsody txmimi
I have tried many times to attack a character who is not currently an enemy, but just get a message saying I can't talk while in combat mode. The next statement about clicking combat again and choosing a character just doesn't work. What am I missing?
Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
You need to press the attack button. Still in A4, right? It's one of the buttons at the bottom of the screen, looks like a dagger, sort of.
Rotghroth Rhapsody txmimi
Yes, and then it says I'm in combat mode, but I'm not able to actually attack. The character continues to have a blue circle around it, rather than a red, and I can't use any weapons or spells on it.
Garrulous Glaahk Mistah Q
Is their name blue or green?
Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
I think you're confusing the combat mode button with the attack button. If this is A4, the combat mode button is on the upper right side of the screen and looks like a fat lightning bolt (it changes to a peace sign when you're actually in combat mode). The attack button is on the bottom of the screen, between the "get" button and your first spell slot. So to attack a non-hostile creature, you must first enter combat mode (via the fat lightning bolt button, or pressing 'f'), then press the 'attack' button (on the bottom row), then click on the creature.
