Level 1 Hermit
...the Geneforge series? I'm particularly interested in the deep story line, expansive world, and turn-based combat system. The good story telling is a must. I don't want an rpg that just goes around hacking monsters. A sci-fi fantasy setting like Geneforge is a bonus Honestly I would start on other spidweb games but I don't like the gaming engine of the early avernum and other similar games. It takes so long for me to travel to a spot, and the movements are too rigid for my taste. I'm not saying those games overall are not good. The way you play the game is just not my cup of tea, I hope you understand?
Emmisary of Immanence
If you really want turn-based combat the list becomes pretty small or pretty old. The best match, in my opinion, is Fallout 1 and 2. Arcanum might fit your bill, since it has a turn-based option, but I don't think the storyline is quite as deep and it's just a little bit unbalanced and glitchy. Still a classic, though! —Alorael, who can understand not liking early Spiderweb games. How about later ones, though? Avernum: Escape From the Pit and the Avadon games are newer than the Geneforges. Even the later Avernum games, 4-6, are at least similarly aged, if not similar in gameplay, and you don't absolutely need to play the series in order. But no, none of them really have the same kind of branching story depth as Geneforge. Avadon comes closest, but it's still quite a bit more linear and less driven by faction-based branching. Lilith
it's just a little bit unbalanced and glitchy in fairness both of those things are also true of fallout 1 and 2 (especially 2)
Indignus
...the Geneforge series? Ha! I told you that game would be a better-than-decent (can't find a fitting word) one! Sadly, I haven't found a game with the similar feeling as Geneforge, except for KOTOR, 3d turn-based with an excellent storyline with a rating of 9.3 in IGN. ----- -Nightwatcher
Rya.Reisender
I can see how Avernum plays differently from Geneforge, but Avadon is actually pretty close! How encounters work and the fast map travelling is straight taken from Geneforge. The Might & Magic VI - VIII trilogy is kind of sci-fi exploration, despite you not actually seeing many sci-fi elements (they are hiding, but they are there!). But saying it has a deep story is kind of a stretch. Thinking of good story + sci-fi, I'd probably rather go for JRPGs like the Star Ocean series. Or Phantasy Star (the old ones for Genesis or their remakes). In fact thinking about it, Phantasy Star 1 actually fits best to the requirements despite the story still not being as deep as the one of Spiderweb games unless you put the whole timeline together. It has turn-based combat, an expansive world (well, multiple planets and often the order you have to play through them is optional) and has a sci-fi setting. You could go for the remake that was recently translated to English by a fan (http://www.pscave.com/psg1/download/). Of course I mean best except for Fallout 1&2 which had been suggested already. Level 1 Hermit
I checked all the games you guys mentioned on google/youtube and they just can't match up to par with the Geneforge series, and I've already tried some Avadon (It's... ehhhhh okay). There's always a gripe here and there that I can't stand. It's too bad. Geneforge 7 where are you???? Edit: Whoops mybad I miscouted cuz I remmeber most spiderweb* games have like... two trilogies... Valdain the King
Your missing out on The Quest. Its a single player first person turnbased rpg. It looks like daggerfall only was made now. Its deeply challenging like Geneforge and has an excellent storyline. Everything you do in game has an effect on later on. Ive never seen a game that came so close to good and evil. It throws turning thoughts to you and yet for me it reafirms my belief in good. I've played through it 3 times so far each with a different race. It has Avernums free choice with your skills and stats. So you can use light weapons and anyone of the 7 magic schools, or just be a fighter that pays for his repairs with mercantile skill. Geneforge, Fallout and the Quest are my favorite of these games. Geneforge and the Quest get most originalty http://redshift.hu/ My favorite stat is personality because it gives more dialogue options. Dikiyoba
G7? What happened to Geneforge 6? Although given what happened to the last Geneforge series with a multiple of 3 and the discontinuities of G5, maybe skipping G6 was for the best. Dikiyoba suspects it was lost in a bog. Which is also where Blades of Geneforge was thankfully lost. Roamers seem to like marshy areas; maybe one of them ate the games.
A less presumptuous name.
All subsequent Geneforge games were being developed on the second continent. When that continent disappeared, so too did games following G5.
Little Fyora
lost in a bog. Which is also where Blades of Geneforge was thankfully lost. Don't give up hope; BoG will arise one day and life will be beautiful, just like old times. You just need to believe blindly in it
