Tenderfoot Thahd Dogar
Can anyone tell me the exact weight values for how much it takes to lose AP due to ecumberance, and whether its possible to increase the encumberance cap by increasing strength? Thanks
Ineffable Wingbolt Mosquito---Slayer
Which game?
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
First trilogy games have encumbrance drops due to bulky armor and you need to increase defense to remove the penalty. Second trilogy and newer games have weight with 4 or 5 pounds per AP point and strength fixes it.

Seasoned Roamer Thoukydides
In Avernum 1 Hardiness reduces armor penalty, or encumbrance, by 4% per level and Defense does nothing for encumbrance. Armor penalty will reduce your base chance to hit. Every 5% of armor penalty will reduce chance to hit by 5%. Armor penalty will also decrease 1 action point every 16% armor penalty, so at 32% armor penalty you have -2 AP. I don't know anything about encumbrance in Avernum 2 or 3. In Avernum 3 I think Defense is the skill you need to reduce encumbrance.
Unflappable Drayk Alex
It's Hardiness in Avernum 3, too - the encumberance and AP penalty are displayed in the lower left part of the character sheet, and you can see how encumberance decreases as you increase Hardiness. Articulate Vlish Skladzien
So is AP penalty in A2 reduced by hrdiness, defense or str? And one kinda not connected question about armor: which of two theoretical armor would be better 1-10+4 or 1-18?
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Armor 1-10+4 on average will stop 9.5 damage whereas 1-18 does the same, but you are guaranteed a minimum of 5 for the first one.

Articulate Vlish Skladzien
@Randomizer so weaker armor with higher "+" is better than stronger without it (ea fine leather>studded leather)? Or is thee a way to "force" armor to use it's upper reduction limit? As to the main topic i am asking because last post in this confused me (it says defense reduce AP penalty while hardiness reduce to hit penalty). Easygoing Eyebeast Jerakeen
No, it's Hardiness. This is easy to test with the character editor. Give a new character a bunch of heavy armor, go into combat mode to make sure he has an AP penalty. Go back to the editor and raise Hardiness. Reload game and go into combat mode again. Penalty gone? Check. As for the base damage reduction, it's random. Harehunter and Skladzien
