Avadon Errors

Well its not technically an error, but I have been having trouble with my blade master and well, shadowalkers in general. I am currently a blade master and have shima and jenell in my party. It just seems that melee is worthless in this game. Im not sure if I should keep going as several fights I get into, end up having me getting ensnared and then melee is worthless. Now I have ranged weapons for all my characters, but someone throw me a bone. Should I restart the game and focus on just ranged weapons, or can I use melee and ranged weapons together. I really like the game but I prefer if I could get some good use out of melee as its fun.

Are there any tactics to use to keep melee going for at least a little while?

Ranged attacks do become increasingly superior to melee as the game goes on, but there's a retrainer about halfway through the game. If you can hold out until you get to the Beraza Woods, you can unset all your stat and skill points and respec as a ranged character. Alternatively, if you don't think you can hang in there, you can enter a cheat to retrain your characters immediately: type shift-D and enter retrain in the box that appears.

I found that melee would still do enough damage if you maximized the skill to 8 and concentrated on dexterity for range attacks and defense. The best part about range attacks is that you get two extra tiles over spell attacks so you can retreat and shoot. Melee attackers also run into scripted area effect attacks later in the game.

There is a retrainer near Castle Vebeaux, the third quest, so you can adjust your characters.

The main problem you start to run into as a melee character is not damage output but survival. You need high dexterity to avoid attacks or you'll be worn down by mobs of enemies in just a round or two, especially on higher difficulties. I continued using a melee-specced Shima up until I reached the retrainer, but even with all the useful passive resistance boosts in the Shadowwalker tree he was just too fragile to keep using after that point without retraining.

This really makes the fight with Miranda comical, also when I played I managed to complete the game with only melee on both my blademaster and shadowalker, but I was playing on hard so I won't say It's viable in all conditions.

Im more used to Geneforge games where I can find a way to lure enemies to my blade. Avadon its tougher to do that, still a cool story so far.

Oh well I was going to find a way around that. I was going to put every point into dexterity and endurance and then use gemstones to enhance strength. With that and 8 points into melee training it might work on normal, at least I hope. Oh well, worth a shot.

No, I think you will just suck at everything. :(

Not you personally, of course.

But doesn't melee have distinct advantages, particularly for a blademaster? The cleave effect of melee weapons is hideously broken (unblockable, undodgable, AND hitting 2 squares away), and many of the blademaster's passive traits actually grant bonuses when he is hit, most notably battle frenzy. Couldn't a blademaster just gear up in the heaviest armour available and rely on raw damage reduction, instead of dodging?

That works a lot better in theory than in practice. The cleave chance isn't very high, so it'll only be a modest increase to your total damage output even when enemies are clustered so that you can cleave them. At higher levels even a ranged blademaster will gain enough strength from automatic levelup bonuses to wear the heaviest armour, and it doesn't help that much anyway: even with excellent armour and maxed-out HP bonuses, many late-game enemies can take you out from full health in three or four hits.
