theta-soul
Ultima was great for the time, but now I feel like only 6, 8 and 9 are not dated enough to warrant playing again. Avernum does the Ultima-style game way better ^^
Lilith
why would you ever want to play ultima

Harehunter
I am extremely fond of the King's Quest Series. DOSBox is probably the best way to run these abandonware games.

It has a very good 3Dfx emulation (in my opinion the best). I use it for Tomb Raider 1.
Harehunter
According to this site Edited out. and a few others, they are listed as abandonware. I suspect the site you picked out are not selling the game, just the service and media to distribute the software on CD. One other series I have but have not had the time to play is the Realms of Arkania trilogy. If I could just finish mapping Exile 3, I may attempt to tackle them. As you'd see if you followed my links, they're selling the game in direct download format: no CDs involved. GOG is a well-known and respected company that licenses old games from IP holders, patches them or includes a DOSbox wrapper to make them playable on modern computers, and sells them to customers. Don't believe everything you read on a blog: "abandonware" is a made-up term that has no legal force anyway. And don't try to justify piracy when there's an easy, legitimate way to buy a game. Harehunter
They are not just a blog, but they have downloads for a large library of older DOS games. There are other sites that have free downloads of the games as well. If someone knows the email address for Ken Williams, they could ask him and clear this up. The term has no legal meaning, and much abandonware is not in the public domain, and so cannot be legally copied or distributed without the permission of the owner. Anyway old copyrights are sometimes not defended. This can be due to intentional non-enforcement by their owners due to the software’s age or obsolescence or any other reason. So I think that allow the download of these games is a good way to preserve these old titles that made the story of videogames from disappearing There are a small, small number of special cases like Ultima IV (also available on GOG, free of charge) where the copyright holder actually did permit free redistribution of the game, but they're very much the exception rather than the rule. Harehunter
This site supports your position. I have withdrawn the link already, and I concede that you are correct in this matter.
Lilith
Thanks. I'm not gonna get all up in someone's grill if they choose to download a game that can't be bought anywhere, even if it's technically a breach of copyright, but when there are legitimate avenues to buy a game I think the right thing to do is to support the people who are making those games available.
