What is your bounding box?

Who on Spiderweb has travelled the most? More specifically, who has covered the most area on a map? Take a look at Google Maps and figure out the northernmost, easternmost, southernmost, and westernmost places you have been to. Then figure out their coordinates (Wikipedia helps out here). Whoever has covered the most area wins the respect and admiration of the Spiderweb community!*

Northernmost: Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, AB, CA

055.400 degrees N

114.800 degrees W

Easternmost: Montreal, QC, CA

045.517 degrees N

073.650 degrees W

Southernmost: Niagara Falls, ON, CA

043.080 degrees N

079.071 degrees W

Westernmost: Nanoose Bay, BC, CA

049.250 degrees N

124.183 degrees W

North-South distance: 12.32 degrees

East-West distance:: 50.522 degrees

Total Area: 622.567 degrees squared

(Yes, I know, it's not a real rectangle, deal with it.)

you can actually just do a google search to find the coordinates of a place: if you search for (placename) coordinates or (placename) latitude longitude it'll tell you the coordinates at the top of the page

Northernmost: Lady Musgrave Island, QLD, Australia

23.9083 deg S, 152.3942 deg E

Easternmost: Tweed Heads, NSW, Australia

28.1833 deg S, 153.5500 deg E

Southernmost: Port Arthur, TAS, Australia

43.1500 deg S, 147.8500 deg E

Westernmost: Mt Gambier, SA, Australia

37.8301 deg S, 140.7802 deg E

N-S distance: 19.2417 degrees

E-W distance: 12.7698 degrees

Area: 245.7127 deg^2

i'd be doing a lot better if i'd ever been to perth

Northernmost and easternmost: Moscow, Russia (55.7517° N, 37.6178° E)

Southernmost and westernmost: Honolulu, Hawai'i (21.3069° N, 157.8583° W)

So I _would_ have done it properly, with haversines and spherical triangles, but then that would have underestimated my distance relative to everyone else. It's all your faults.

d1 = 195.4761 degrees

d2 = 34.4448

d1*d2 = 6733.14 whatever weird unit we're using

I'd have won handily if I've been to NZ, I guess.

East-West distance: 83.0983°

Total Area: 2,368.4594 degrees squared

Dikiyoba had to steal Kekaha from Actaeon because Google was giving an obviously incorrect coordinate for Waimea, but the two places are practically on top of each other anyway.

Easternmost: 52.516111°N and 13.376944°E (the Berlin Wall)

Westernmost: 22°01′22″ N and 159°47′06″ W (Barking Sands Pacific Missile Range, Kauai)

Southernmost: 18.9111°N and 155.681111°W (Ka Lae or South Point, Hawaii)

Northernmost: not really sure, let's say Berlin again

So (rounding off because I'm lazy)

N-S is 35, and E-W is 172, and area is 6020. Nowhere close to the widely travelled Slith, though.

It's misleading to do the date line one. You asked for a "bounding box", which I feel implies that all the other points we've visited lie within the extremes. The Paris data point shows which box he means. He's never been anywhere between Australia and Michigan, and boundaries should reflect that.

Dantius gets props for efficiency by only needing two points.

(Edit: Pardon my pronouns; I'm making assumptions based on board demographics.)

Northernmost- Gympie, Quennsland, Australia.

Westernmost- Kingaroy, As Above

Souhternmost- Batemans Bay, New South Wales.

Easternmost- Well, living on the east coast of Australia, I don't think I would be capable walking or driving any further east. Unless you want to count an off shore fishing trip I had last year.

I would also submit that you and I, in Colorado and Pennsylvania respectively, are more culturally similar to each other than we are to the deep south. tongue

I think part of the reason many easterners have been to Europe but haven't crossed the Mississippi (I have crossed it, by the way; I just didn't go very far when I did. tongue ) is that when one goes on a vacation, one often wants to go somewhere different. Europe is decidedly more different from the east coast than the west coast is.

I would agree with Tyranicus. There is a lot of cultural variety throughout the continental U.S. but, at least in the places I've seen, there's still more that people have in common.

Hawaii is the closest I've experienced to visiting a foreign country while still being in the U.S. Very different cultural influences than what you find on the mainland. For any lower 48 state A and lower 48 state B that you could pick, they are downright identical when compared to Hawaii. It's a fascinating place.

Interesting. I find more culturally continuity between the Colorado Western Slope and the more rural parts of Hawaii than the same and the Colorado Front Range. I suppose it all depends on which element you're focusing on.

As for the west coast not being that different from the east... sure, but there's a lot between the Mississippi and the coast.

Tyran, how did you get your total area? It's quite inflated...

27.108 * 97.820 = 2,651.70456
I have no idea. You are correct, but I thought that was the calculation I performed.

Hmmm... my box can be figured with two points -

North/Western Most - Anchorage, Alaska - 61.1919° N, 149.7621° W

South/Eastern Most - Palm Beach, Florida - 26.7053° N, 80.0367° W

North-South distance: 34.4866°

East-West distance: 69.7254°

Total Area - 2404.5920° squared

Not bad for a guy whose never left his country of origin.

Hm, let me Google that for me....Yikes, east and west are pretty much a game of inches.

North: Copper Harbor, MI

South: Atlanta, GA

East: Toronto, Ontario, Canada (this beat out Niagara Falls (I've been to both the US and Canadian side); Gettysburg, PA; Corning, NY; and Virginia Beach, VA)

West: Copper Harbor, MI (surprisingly, this beat out Traverse City, MI; Holland, MI; and Mammoth Cave, KY)

Cool, I've had Longyearbyen on my travel list since I was 13 or so.

I'm somewhat obsessed with the North for some reason.

I may be taking a trip to Australia in six months, so this question was posed too early.

Wait, you went to Copper Harbor without going to Isle Royal? That's different.
