TUX
Map Editor would be really nice. One that allows adding new objects/tiles/other graphics. I doubt one is going to be released, at least not soon but... I can always wish. I tried search but only found irrelevant stuff. Has anything been said about this? nikki.
Probably not going to happen. After Jeff's experiences with BoA (his company almost went bust), he's pretty much said no to stuff like this. I know what you're asking for is a long way removed from Blades, but it'd still require making some kind of editor, and making it user-friendly and all that, so don't hold your breath. Earth
no and highly unlike that happens, closest to making new maps are Blades of Avernum and Blades of Exile and those are independent games.
TUX
Out of curiosity, what happened with blades of avernum?
nikki.
It sold very poorly for a number of reasons, and put serious financial strain on Spiderweb, due to the time Jeff spent working on it; time that wasn't spent on other games that'd have sold better. Compared to BoE, it was much more difficult to design for, and a lot of the community who may have designed for BoA due to their experience with BoE had either moved on or didn't want to touch the new game with a barge pole. The fact that the demo for BoA was identical to that for BoE also probably contributed, but it was no one thing. As much as I love BoA, the amount of attention it receives from forum-goers these days makes it pretty clear that any attempt by Jeff to make something similar would be a daft idea at best, unless he somehow spent the extra time making the new editor as easy to use as BoE (which had a huge following and was very successful)
Randomizer
The editor is what Jeff uses to make the game, but he would need to write lots of documentation which he hates to do. Also there needs to be rigorous testing to make sure there aren't bugs if users do things that Jeff wouldn't do. Read the Blades of Exile and Avernum forums and you will see the bugs that will never get fixed in BoA and all the ones fixed in BoE. Lilith
If Jeff wanted to make another Blades, he'd probably be in a better financial position to risk taking a bath on it now than he was back when he made BoA. The real issue is that after how BoA went, he has no particular reason to want to repeat the experience.
Juan Carlo
I don't see the need for an editor. I love spiderweb games, but I don't exactly play them for their awesome engine or anything (the engine is serviceable, but there are more user friendly ones out there). If you want to mess around with making your own RPG worlds I'd recommend "Neverwinter Nights." It's a decade old now but it still has one of the most user friendly level editors of any RPG on the market. Skyrim/Oblivion are pretty easy to mod as well but those are really more FPS's.
