Kyshakk Koan Valdain the King
Is there a point in getting your spells to 3rd level? I have some healing spells at lvl 2 and it just gives a 10% bonus to it which isnt much. Im wondering if there's a real bonus to them that is substantial instead of just minor. There's got to be a list where the good bonuses are listed.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
Some are really good. For example, level 3 Haste has a 30% chance to give a Battle Frenzy effect, and level 3 Fireblast is an extra 20% damage over level 2 (which itself is an extra 20% damage over level 1). Others are pretty forgettable, and a few spells (like Return Life) have no bonus at all for increasing level.
Well-Actually War Trall Micawber
Level 3 of Haste is mind-bogglingly good. Level 3 is also worthwhile for the Cloak of X and Ward of Y spells, according to the analysis posted earlier by Slarty. An extra 10% bonus to damage/healing is pretty handy, after all, skill points are limited. However for many of the spells, I did find the bonus 'extra' effect at level 3 underwhelming or pointless. The summoning spells are a good example. There are way too many spells that give War Curse as a supposed bonus. Spine shield with War Blessing. Not sure what level 3 of Return Life even does. Well-Actually War Trall Micawber
See the min-max thread. http://www.spiderwebforums.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=264048
Rotghroth Rhapsody Kreador
As I recall, specifically some of the healing spells also give a chance of regeneration at level 3 (meaning they continue to heal you in subsequent rounds without casting again). Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Level 3 Icy Spray can immobilize targets which is great when you spam it against monsters that can only do melee attacks. I used it a lot versus sliths.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
icy spary? you mean icy wind or icy rain? latter does immobilize but at least against Giants/Ogres its not that effective since they shake it off when their turn come and hit party. Burgeoning Battle Gamma SapientCrow
dispel level 3 needed for certain places all wards cloaks much better at level 3 protection war blessing give regeneration and spines respectivley at level 3 fire ball cleaves icy rain immobilizes (yah not too great with ogres and giants but even with immune shades and undead it can immoblize haste has battle frenzy mass heal has regeneration there is a lot of benefits to level 3 spells exlcuding a few. I am not sure why they let you improve return life tbh
Magnificent Ornk nikki.
RE: Return Life. Maybe if it had a reduced cost (or provided regeneration or buffings) at higher levels, it'd be more worthwhile?

Or have level 1 revive characters at 1 HP, level 2 revive at half HP and level 3 revive at full HP. It'll only really matter if you're reviving characters in combat, but that's a very powerful application of the spell, so it's still a meaningful difference. Rotghroth Rhapsody The Reverend
That would be a nice way to differentiate the different levels of return life. I mostly only used it in combat. Otherwise I'd just run back to town.

Or casting return life does damage to undead monsters!
Curious Artila tyrtix
Fireball cleaves at level 2, minor heal at lev. 3 grants 3 rounds of regeneration (wich generally fulls up again a character no matter the hits, up to level 20). I miss mainly a spell against undead, wich was present from the first avernum and even in exile... Anyway, giving that the bonus is at least a +10% of power, you need 5 skill points or 3 traits to do the same.
