Demonslayer was a normal blade?

Recommended Posts

I found something quite odd...If Karzoth (the guy who wielded Demonslayer), Thralni and Scrionth? And two other guys led the first expedition to Avernum, would they have no idea what's awaiting them? I don't remember if any of Karzoth's lieutenants had the ability to enchant weapons with the power to obliterate demons. So would that not mean Demonslayer is a normal blade??? Or was Karzoth was originally named Demonslayer (Karzoth means Demonslayer) and he created the blade beforehand.

If not, isn't it just a really finely crafted blade? How does the lore go?

1) Scrioth was the name of a sword, not a person. The only names we actually know from the First Expedition are Karzoth, Mariann, Thralni, and possibly Grahk. We know Karzoth was the big leader, Mariann was his consort, and Thralni seems to have held either power of influence in some way, but it's not clear how. It seems likely that the Expedition had five official leaders (including Karzoth); one for each brooch.

2) They took magical artifacts down with them -- they didn't make them in the caves.

If you accept the fanon that Karzoth means Demonslayer, I'd imagine the weapon was a family heirloom. He brought it down because it was his powerful magical sword, possibly not expecting demons.

Remember that the First Expedition wasn't sent down empty-handed like all the exiles. They were fully equipped with arms, armor, and artifacts. They just weren't very good at making good decisions.

—Alorael, who imagines they didn't have any idea what awaited them. They probably brought whatever they thought would be useful and did a halfway decent job, except for the part where they picked fights with everyone. The real lore problem is their apparently having fought a battle with sliths and nephilim, which explains how the nephils got part of Demonslayer. How were there nephilim in the caves before the Emperor decided to use them as a dumping ground for undesirables, or did he start sending nephils before any humans had explored?

Well there is evidence of humans being in the caves before the first visitation. Such as the first-of-the-month crypt and in A5 a lich/wizard claiming to have come down there centuries before.

Who is to say groups of nephilim could have not found a way down through one of passages before they were blocked?

The battle was with nepharim, not nephilim. This is a small detail, but it makes the problem slightly easier as the nepharim seem more prone to antisocial activities like hiding in caves.

Also, the Olgai tribe in X2 has not encountered humans before, but they do not seem surprised to see nephils. So some of them must have been in the caves already.

So the description says, but you can't have a self-maintaining nepharim tribe. Where there are nephars, there are nephils.

There seem to have been humans before, but they're all long dead. If there were nephilim recently, why do the nephilim you speak to during the series make no mention of it? They all claim to be banished just like you.

—Alorael, who just assumed vahnatai can't really tell humans and nephilim apart. They're all mammalian humanoids with hair.

try to put a spoiler warning in ur post subject. Not everyone has played avernum yet.
That's not really a spoiler. Who wielded Demonslayer has no real bearin on the plot, and you learn about Demonslayer itself fairly early on in the game.
