What is going on here?

I haven't logged in for quite a few months due to the very negative reaction I received from the community about my comments for Avadon. I'll admit, I wasn't thrilled about Jeff making a remake of a remake for the upcoming game. But I decided to check it out.

I see now many different prices for Avernum Escape from the pit on several different websites. Not to mention, there's no demo version for the iPad and that's a completely different price. I thought, starting with Avadon, Jeff switched to a universal system that I could use regardless of my platform once I bought the game. Guess not.

I remember Jeff's blogs where he defended his price scheme and said to hell with opinions otherwise. Seems he caved.

I've watched Jeff, an extremely talented game developer, go from great to crap in two years. Not to mention his community flamers make you feel unwelcome if you express your point of view. I will not be buying the new Avernum. Sorry.

Many people have appreciated the change. Jeff has the right to follow any legal business model he likes, just as you have the same right not to buy his games. It appears both of you will be exercising those rights.

I was not a big fan of A6 or Avadon (thought I bought both), but quite enjoyed AEftP. To each their own.

Not only very true, but by far the best response I've received on this forum. To each their own.

Why does this matter? There's no reason to buy Spidwerweb games from anywhere other than the official Spidwerweb site (except in the case of for the iPad).

Of course not. Applications for devices like the iPhone and iPad are a whole different park. I believe there's someplace that can explain this part better than I could. And besides, there's still the option of trying the demo on your computer.

No, he has not caved. As stated above, the iPad is a completely different park.

Matter of opinion. I feel he's continuing to produce games of a different quality than the mainstream, even though he seems to carry the whole recycling thing a bit too much. *coughExileAvernumAvernum*

I see no flamers, but merely others who add their viewpoints and argue against yours. It's not to make people feel unwelcome. People here love to debate.

Jeff's position is that he's essentially selling the game to a number of separate customer bases that he has to treat as different markets and price accordingly. I don't know enough about the gaming industry to know if this is an ideal strategy, but he claims his sales figures are working out okay, at least.

Sorry to hear that you're dissatisfied with SW's recent games and business models. I sincerely hope you enjoy whatever else you do decide to spend your time doing instead.

Thanks Lilith, or Thriel, or what ever name you go by now.

Actually I've been spending my time donating to bake sales lately. I've raised over 1k for my charity and I'm quite happy.

As far as flamers mentioned above, you're probably the worst. If any single person chased me away from this site, it's you. For what it's worth...

I never intended to flame you; only to correct false statements you made about Avadon and to suggest other ways of playing the game that you might have enjoyed more. I'm sorry that I didn't succeed in getting my intentions across to you.

And Barzhal wonders why other posters respond to him with hostility...

Disagreeing != flaming.

I would go out on a limb and simply assume you misinterpreted what she said. This can happen. Personally, I would suggest going back and re-evaluating what was said, if you do believe you were in fact flamed.

Lilith/Thuryl, and Tiriel, are two totally different users. They both have dragon-looking avatars.

I'm not an expert, but I think the lack of a demo is probably because there's no easy way to have saves transfer if the demo is a separate app, and Jeff doesn't know how to make the full game an unlockable part of the demo app by pay.

Yes, he did. He's made more money by capitulating, apparently. You're free to buy from the cheapest source, at least.

Was it? I thought only the Exile series got subtitles, and the Avernum series just got numbers.

—Alorael, who is sorry that you feel like you were flamed out of the community. You're welcome back. People are pretty nice here, usually.
