A-EftP - Smash the orb: stuck?

The empire outpost in the gremlin cave is an interesting quandary. I can get through the first teleporter just fine, but the combat gets a lot harder after you enter the teleporter and commit yourself to the quest. I have discovered that entering the room with the commander is certain death, but as far as I can tell there is no way out except through him. Autosave and my last two saves are all after the teleporter, and then I'd have to replay a decent amount of the game from my last save. Don't get me wrong, it's not math homework. Avadon is a fun game. But still I'd rather not. Any ideas?

There are some tricks to help in fights. One is to retreat through a doorway into a room and stand just inside on either side of the door. This way the Empire troops will block the doorway and most of the rest will stay outside of line of sight. Then you can just fight them a few at a time.

 

The other is in combat mode try to run past them to the next portal. However you need to know where to go and hope one character survives to leave the Gremlin Cave.
