Avadon basic questions

Where is the open world? I feel too guided in Avadon, like I can't explore. I feel this takes away a lot of the open-endedness that is otherwise typically expected from Spiderweb Software games. Instead, I find myself having to search for quests simply to trigger these areas.

Why can't the characters attack at will, turning against any NPC regardless of initial alliance standing?

Am I overlooking something? Is there a setting to make these elements possible? At this point in the game I still feel like it is too linear compared to previous Spiderweb games.

Jeff has been moving away from open worlds since it is easier to balance out combat for players so they don't wander into areas before they should be ready. He doesn't like player deaths should teach players where not to go since it causes too many players to just stop playing.

Avernum: Escape from the Pit goes back to the old open world system.

Also you are a Hand, a soldier of Avadon, sent out into the world to do a specific task. You may do side quests for people you meet, but there is always a specific thing that you must do to complete the mission. This removes the element of getting to new map areas without finding a person that opens it up.

I think Jeff also wants to limit the players from killing everything out there just because we can. So no more initiate attacks on NPCs and making them hostile by looting when they can see items. However you still can loot if you wait for them to move out of sight.

Avernum party is adventuring soldiers

Avadon party is soldiers with strict orders

also limiting player getting to areas where they get slaughtered is good for business (new players) but bad for veteran players who have played SW games since .........

Blades of Avernum had several debate topics over linear versus non-linear scenarios that give some of the views of members back then. So there is a wide range of views on how players liked to play or be forced to play.

I started with Exile 3 and still prefer the wide open explore where ever you can non-linear worlds. But Jeff has gone over to more linear worlds where AvernumL Escape from the Pit keeps hammering players with quests and hints about the linear path to keep them from exploring.
