Armor comparison

Recommended Posts

My Berserker in SSS slith fortress currently wears boots +4% protection and +3 Luck. He found Radiant boots which are +14% protection and -5% chances to hit.

Is the +3 Luck balancing the +10% protection or not?

And how could I calculate advantages/disadvantages comparing items?

This is only an example of difficult decisions about armors. According to experience Radiant boots compensate the +3% loss and even the -5% chances to hit, but I don't know how and I wish I knew how to be more accurate.

Items value is suggestive, but one can't rely on it.

So which are the factors which determine when an item is better than a similar one?

The easiest way is to go to character stat page and look at the armor and resistances, then swap a piece of armor and look again to see the numbers change. I find that this is the best starting point and then to look at the other item bonuses to see if they help with damage or provide a large damage reduction against something I get hit with a lot.

+3 Luck adds to the resistances slightly, but not as much as wearing Radiant boots. However the -5% to hit chance may be significant to a fighter that is already having trouble hitting most monsters.

Item values are based upon the bonuses, but don't reflect their worth in being useful to you. Lots of low value items are more useful in play than higher value items.

The armor difference is 6.4%...the decrease to your damage output is greater than the decrease to the damage you receive if your hit chance is <=75% before the penalty. But the luck boots are better against anything that attacks HER if your attacks ever miss.

Ok, thanks for calculation :-)

One more thing that is difficult to me to understand: I am now playing a party of two characters, one of them wears armor and other items with total reduction of -20% and armor with total bonus of +8%, so the disadvantage is -12% in chances to hit. The other character wears armor with a total -15% penalty and also wears a +12% items total bonus. In spite of the -12% and -3% the second character miss more often than the first one.

What other factors/stats influence the chance to hit that could explain this thing?

Levels with weapon and associated skills. Strength (if using melee weapon) or Dexterity (if using ranged weapon) or Intelligence (if using spells). Luck.

Yes, I thought about it but both characters are dual wielding and have similar levels:

First character: Strenght level 42 (+8) - Dexterity 33 (+1) - Melee weapons 37 - Dual wielding 10 - Luck 6 (+2)

Second character: Strenght 40 (+4) - Dexterity 36 (+2) - Melee weapons 32 - Dual wielding 10 (+1) - Luck 6 (+2)

It doesn't seem to me there are enough differences to justify a reversal in hitting chances.
