Kendroxide
Ive been lurking these forums for a while now and post every once and a while, but one thought has been stuck in the back of my mind and I would like to express it. What made Jeff decide on making Exile's 6 party system into a 4 party system for Avernum. And is it just me, or did things also get simplified in the process. The thing that worries me even more is that Avadon has been reduced to three people in your party, and has become overly simplistic. There are only 4 different character classes with one skill tree each (has three branches but due to the restrictive nature of the skill system, everyone just chooses the middle path). It's not the linearity that I dislike (often linear games have a great story) but its the fact that each new remake and series seems to get more streamlined and simplified. Its like Exile first started out like Baldur's Gate, but then Avadon turned out to be Dragon Age 2. I know I'm probably gonna get flamed, but I don't care. Those of you who played the Avernum remake, does it feel more like exile or avadon? It just seems like every good RPG seems to get streamlined (loved DA:O but DA2 sucked, and loved ME1 and disliked ME2 and will probably not like ME3 either since I heard its very similar to ME2)
Emmisary of Immanence
I don't think Jeff has laid it out in so many words in any one place, but the assumptions, maybe based on interviews from years ago, are that a six-person party is awkwardly large (especially when traipsing along in single file) and hard to balance fights around. (You can experience some of that in Nethergate. For whatever reason, even the five-person party feels much clunkier than the larger parties in Exile did, probably because of the all-in-a-row marching order.) Avernum: Escape From the Pit isn't like Exile or Avernum, but it isn't like Avadon, either. You don't have classes. You have more freedom on the skill trees, and you get traits to choose as well. I think it makes the character building process easier for players who don't want to juggle skill costs that increase as skills go up, allocating many points per level, and so on. I don't think the system has less depth of build decision. —Alorael, who agrees with your game complaints, but not exactly for simplification reasons. Mass Effect 2's plot suffered in comparison to ME1, and it leaned a little too hard on shooter to the detriment of RPG. Dragon Age 2 just shows clear signs of being rushed, and again, the plot lacks the unity and grand scope of the preceding title. System simplification isn't really the problem in either case. Punctuation rains from the heavens
I would add that _Avernum: Escape from the Pit_ has been quite favorably received among those of us who prefer the Exile Trilogy to the original Avernum Trilogy. I can't say that its details are more like Exile, but the pace of gameplay and the sense of exploration and fun remind me more of Exile than Avernum. I've been undecided about whether I'm willing to try the new version when it comes out for Windows, but now I'll have to give it a go. :-D
Earth
6 char party with 2 fighters and 4 spellcasters (magepriests) would be too powerful against small group of enemies and large ones would take just bit longer and equpping all party members with best possible gear would be difficult. 4 char party and 6 char party have good things and bad things.
