Skill Allocation help

Hello all,

It turns out I need some help with my skill/ability allocation in this game. You see, I have never been one to even glance at defense abilities in any game. For some reason they just aren't interesting to me, so I always try and maximize damage figuring that if the enemy is dead, I won't need defense. This usually leads to me having a much harder time with games than my friends who tend to pick more defensive abilities.

Well that just isn't working out in Avadon. I pumped points deep into all of my characters trees, getting their top tier abilities as quickly as I could. As far as skills, for my Blademaster main I filled him full of strength and Endurance without touching dex or int. My Shadow walker is the same, while my Sorcerer and Shaman are int and end. I have checked out a lot of the stickies and such, and I've realized that I need a lot more dex for my BM and SW for defense.

My question is: How should I allocate skill points? For instance on my Blademaster, should I do a rotation? 1 in Str, 1 in dex, 1 in end, then back to strength? I've found that I am having some serious problems pretty early on (as far as I know). Also, having just completed the Shadow Beast questline, should I just reroll and make a new game, or am I close enough to the respec trainer that I can tough it out until I get there? Thanks in advance.

The optimal defensive loadout for Blademasters and Shadowwalkers is probably to raise Dex and End in about a 2:1 ratio and use missile weapons. Missile weapons are quite strong in Avadon, so you don't miss out on much offensive capacity.

Sorceresses and Shamans should probably raise Int and End in a 2:1 ratio; physical and elemental attacks will pretty much always hit them, so the best defense is just to keep them out of harm's way.

Regarding skills, the middle column skills are very important for all classes. They may not be very exciting, but the passive attack and defense bonuses are almost all excellent.

Don't rush to the top tier. A lot of the top-tier abilities are kind of disappointing, and even the good ones (like the Blademaster's top-right skill) only become really good when you raise them to level 6, which you can't do until level 27 at the earliest.

If you're having enough trouble that the game is unfun for you, I'd recommend using a cheat to retrain your characters. Type shift-D and enter retrain into the box that appears. This will deallocate all of the currently selected character's stat and skill points.

You didn't mention your difficulty level, but above normal difficulty it becomes more important to do it the way Lilith mentioned. After you near the end of the Wretches Warrens you have more fights where you can't kill stuff quickly even if you maximize your character for damage. Also the second area has monsters that poison you so endurance becomes very important to survive a few rounds.

The next area has the respec trainer in the woods outside Castle Vebeaux, but you may want to do some of the quests in Avadon first.

Welcome to Spiderweb Software. Please leave your sanity at the door. It'll help you understand that logic has nothing to do with winning.

Edit - You are at the point in the game where some equipment is worth keeping for the rest of the game. Considering using runestones to increase evasion, dexterity, and endurance.
