All these pods and charms and smithing ingredients are cluttering up my inventory.

Yes. You can drop your excess stuff anywhere you want. A friendly town that you always come back to in order to rest, or near an enchanted anvil, or wherever is convenient to you. (Note that charms only work when they are in your inventory, so you can't really drop those off.)

Some more helpful hints:

 

Remember where you set up your cache, for obvious reasons.

 

If possible, put your items in a container. This will make the floor less cluttered. (This is more for aesthetic purposes.)

 

When you drop stacked items, it's a good idea to put all of those items in the same stack. For example, if you're getting rid of some excess venom thorns, pick up all the venom thorns already in your cache, and then drop what you don't want to carry. This makes them a little easier to keep track of, and won't add as much to the total number of items in the area.

 

Don't worry about thieves. You can drop your stuff anywhere, and nobody will touch it.

 

Depending on how much of a pack rat you become, you may eventually run out of space in your cache. If that happens, just store the additional items on a different space, preferably just out of sight of the first pile (this will avoid some confusion when looking for something in your cache).
