The choices available today make eliminating commercials trivial. DVRs, DVD rental or purchase, pay services like Netflix (streaming is a great way to consume multiple episodes with no commercials,) or downloads from the web (both paid and unpaid.) I don't have any qualms about using the intertubes as a DVR if the video was broadcast via a no-pay broadcaster. I know plenty of people that never watch TV live. They'll start playing back the DVR 20 minutes into an hour long and skip commercials. The goal, I suppose, is to "catch up to the live broadcast" without seeing any ads. As someone who watches TV shows whilst knitting, unless it's a super-complicated pattern where I have to look at a chart constantly, it's not distracting at all. I usually save TV to do whilst knitting because it gives me a story whilst doing a mostly repetitive task, and makes watching TV feel slightly more productive, since I get something tangible out of it. I was in elementary school when blue M&M's came out, so it was definitely more than 10 years ago. As to the pacing, I watch TV shows, but not TV itself. The last time I saw a commercial was during the World Series, and the last time before that was during the All Star Game. You may sense a pattern here. Also, I very infrequently watch TV shows exclusively. I have ADD. Many tasks do not occupy my mind enough for me to do them to the exclusion of all else. I watch TV shows when I am doing various household chores, when I am playing a video game, when I am preparing for work, etc.
