Choppy in Avadon

I saw that a few others were having a choppy game experience (not just in Avadon), so I thought I may help the devs/programmers narrow down the area of the problem.

The game is VERY choppy when I first enter into a large area (meaning it has all the fog of war still). The area needs to have a lot of roaving enemies. If the game pauses for any reason, such as brining up the main menu, combat starts, or a dialogue box is up, the choppiness goes away until real-time starts again. As I begin to clear an area out, the choppieness gets better. Once an area is cleared out completely, it goes away.

This leads me to believe... well... it has something to do with the enemy AI pathfinding. Areas like the starting zone in Avadon, where there are plenty of roaving allies, doesn't appear to cause the game to be choppy (though I'll have to go back there to confirm).

My personal PC isn't the greatest, but seems to run other demanding games well enough. Once I reached the Wretch Warrens, I really couldn't play any longer. It was just TOO choppy then. /cry. I've tried the advice of turning the draw area and graphics settings down and neither setting made any difference. I've absolutely LOVED the Avernum series and have had no issues with that game engine.

I wouldn't mind trying the DirectX version of the game, but sadly my product key from GamersGate will not active the DirectX version.

Specs:

Win7 Ultimate 64bit with SP1 (updated to today's OS updates)

Core2Duo T5550 @ 1.83 GHz

4GB DDR2 RAM

NVidia GeForce 8800M GTS (I think it has 512MB of dedicated RAM - DXDIAG says 2286MB total RAM)

Latest NVidia drivers @ 280.26

Hope that helps get a fix in for the first Windows version patch! smile
