Laikos
I'm fascinated by the retro feel and strategy of Avadon, and I admit it is my first Spiderweb game. I was brought to it from iPad but I see most people liked other series more for less linearity in characters and storyline. That being said... what do you suggest I go to next? And if you say something like "Geneforge," should I start from the beginning or do a more recent title due to improvements?
Triumph
My favorite SW game is Nethergate: Resurrection; I'd highly recommend trying the demo (though it is a bit older in interface). Other favorites for me (in no particular order) are G1, G2, and Avernum 6. All are excellent! Most people on the forums reckon G1 and G2 as two of best Geneforge games, and would recommend that you play the early games before the later ones for precisely the reason you mention. If want to experiment with Geneforge, I'd say try the G1 demo and see if it intrigues you. The older Avernum games (1-3) are good, too but I have trouble running them on my Intel Mac; remakes of them are also in the works eventually. The great thing about SW is that all the games have extremely generous demos areas (usually significantly larger than the Avadon demo), so you can usually get a strong taste of the gameplay / atmosphere / interface before making a decision. I hope this helps. Have fun!
Lilith
Well, if you enjoyed the idea of having to make difficult moral choices, the Geneforge series may be for you. If you'd like a game of open-ended exploration where you basically run around doing More Or Less Good, the Avernum series may be more your thing. Both the Avernum and Geneforge series received major engine facelifts from the fourth game onward, so my advice for either series would be to try the demo of the first game, and if the engine feels too primitive and awkward, try the fourth game instead. You'll miss out on a bit of the overarching plot by jumping in at the middle of the series, but nothing essential to enjoying any of the games. Sudanna
I wouldn't call the changes to Geneforge major, or all taking place at the fourth game.
Micawber
The change to the way action points work is major.
