Curious Artila Daisy Munchkin
Want to highlight switches in Avadon. I'm fairly simple in my comp skils, but have found file to update, made changes and now can't save notepad file. I'm running w/win7. I think cannot save because of way laptop is configures, something to do with Admin Access, (toldya I was simply skilled) but can't figure out how to get around the problem. I keep getting access denied msgs. This laptop is on loan to me, but do have ok to treat as my own. Help please if anyone can and will. Going blind looking for switches. Hope Jeff does something about making them a little easier to see. Daise the Munchkin
Easygoing Eyebeast Dintiradan
I run Vista and I had the same problem. The issue is the way Vista/Win7 treats files stored under the Program Files directory. Windows won't allow you to modify files stored there (while I think higher access control was needed, a flat out 'access denied' wasn't the way to go). What you need to do: copy avobjmisc.txt to somewhere you do have write access, like your Desktop. Make the changes and save them. Finally, copy the file back into the Avadon directory. You will get an Access Control prompt, but it will work this way.
Curious Artila Daisy Munchkin
Thanks for the reply. but problem still not solved. Can copy to desktop, make changes and save file on desktop, but cannot replace file back to where it orter be. Its the destination file that has all the protection. I sometimes think the Win7 bods are just too damn smart for their own good with all the highfaluting accesses and control and protections. No one uses this laptop but moi. and I'm no whizzkid with the tech stuff
Easygoing Eyebeast Dintiradan
Huh. That must be something new with Win7 then. Another, more extreme option would be to reinstall Avadon to another directory, one that doesn't have the write protection that "Program Files" does. For instance, I have Blades of Avernum installed to C:\Programs\Blades of Avernum.
Well-Actually War Trall Micawber
You can still edit files in "Program Files" provided you launch your favorite text editor with the "Run as Administrator" option. (Right click on the icon, or is often quicker Ctrl+Shift+Enter when using Start Menu search.) If you want to edit the files often, it's more convenient just to give yourself ownership of the Avadon folder. This is easily done in the Security tab of the folder properties. Curious Artila Daisy Munchkin
Again, thanksalot u all. I'm going to try reinstalling somewhere else when I get time and/or energy. I'm watching some guy on the telly eat a sandwich of steak, ffries, mozz sticks, fried mushrooms/onion rings, potstickers, more cheese, greek sauce, deepfried garlic topped off with green sauce and franks hot sauce. Wouldn't want to wake up next to him tomorrow!
