Moved out of my previous post so others looking for party advice will find this easier and not get hit w/ spoilers.

Here is my party, I would appreciate any advice. I'm not looking to be the most powerful. I just want to be able to do most things and stay on hard difficulty. If the game gets too easy, I will lose interest, as had happened the second I tried normal mode. As an aside, I'd like to mention the difference between normal and hard is incredible!

Endurance always helps and getting it to 6 will keep your fighters alive as you leave the demo area. Quick action for the fighters also helps to give a chance for extra attacks.

Give your second character tool use 12 and you can pick up some nice loot especially the Fissure Inn and Fort Saffron.

Get your third character (priest) up to the point where you can cast control foe.

Following your advice exactly, it seems sound. I had already planned on getting my 2 melee cats to 10 QA, I read a chart that shows it gives the most bang for the buck. But first I will get them to 6 endurance. Before I had thought that % damage reduction from skills was more lucrative per skill point than % increase to HPs, but getting one-shotted is no fun. I wish I had held off on arcane lore and just bought it from trainer, but oh well.

I've actually used a lot of your posts to help me w/ my group. I really appreciate all of your efforts.

One thing that I have been unable to find is what spells become unlocked at what spell levels. The thing is, I don't want to see a spell list, as I like the surprise of unlocking them. But I certainly don't want to be pumping priest/mage skill for no reason!

Oh I also have been unable to figure out what unlocks the battle disciplines. I have tried doing searches, but the forum search tool doesn't seem helpful for me. Even "Avernum 6 discipline" returns a useless list.

Thanks again

The highest Priest or Mage skill level you will need is 17.

Battle disciplines are unlocked by your total battle skills, which are:

Melee and Pole--each rank = 1

Bows and Thrown--each rank = .5

So if you have 3 in Melee and 2 in Bows, your battle skills total is 4. Disciplines start unlocking at 5, continuing at intervals up to 20. Bonuses from race, traits, and equipment apply toward your battle skills total.

Edit: This is why it can be worthwhile to purchase (with gold, not skill points) training in a weapon your character doesn't use.

Randomizer is right, but you will find a couple of items that give you bonuses in tool use. Keep them, and put them on as necessary. But spending a lot of skill points on tool use as early in the game as you are is probably overkill. Just make a note of where things are and come back to them later. What you need right now are Endurance, Luck, and Hardiness, so you can hang in a fight long enough to do some damage. As you get access to better weapons and armor, you can push up your dual wielding and transition from sword and shield to dual swords. (Hint: You can steal a nice waveblade in the castle and it will be one of your best weapons for a long time.)

You've maxed out Defense at 5 and Dex at 4 -- that will unlock all the skills they control -- don't waste another point on them. You need to push up Hardiness to unlock DW (though buy all the DW you can from the trainer first). And you'll eventually want to buy 9 points of Melee (on top of what you get from your traits) to unlock Blademaster, which becomes not only a bargain in terms of damage you do, but also you need to buy a few points to unlock Riposte and Lethal Blow.

I made a figure showing how all of these skills are related, and posted it near the end of Slarty's "Comprehensive Skill Effect List." It's completely insane, but with that, and some of the info you can find on damage, quick action, and quick strike, you should be in good shape. Some skills aren't worth pursuing: Pathfinder and Sharpshooter are the prime examples. You'll never be able to get a lot of Riposte or Lethal Blow unless you really focus on them, but even a couple of points are probably worth the effort.

Now get going and kill those damn nephil of the Fang Clan. Bunch of punks if you ask me.

Thanks for the advice folks. It seems like I was a bit overzealous in buying dex points. I was trying to set myself up for parry/riposte later on and decided, what the heck, why not throw in one more for gymnastics. I will start to bring hardiness up a bit per the advice.

I believe that I was looking at that chart, and the per point damage increase for skills. It was very helpful and illuminated the fact that QA is really the most lucrative, up to skill 10.

I was also reading Randomizer's list of trainers, which also included "GP spent per skill point saved." This seems like a great way to decide on which things to train first, and which things its just better to spend my skill points on. Gold seems very tight in this game!

I am also curious what data can be derived from the saved game files. I have looked for a saved game editor for a starting point, but have just found references to the character editor in game.

I am learning a little bit of javascript and it seems like I could convert the character data into an xml file. And then populate a web form with that data. This form could also include derived stats such as chance to hit, damage etc. using the algorithms contained in this forum. It would also be really cool if we could see each other's characters on those forms. Kind of like what they do with world of warcraft armory. But I'm just a beginner...
