Fledgling Fyora belange
I realize this is a longshot, but the last time I tried, my scavenged machine couldn't handle the Avernum and Geneforge engines. I may be alone in this perversion, but I think I also prefer the Exile look anyway. Is there a way to devolve the newer Avernums (or their demos) to that sort of thing, or am I going to have to pay $10 for a faster computer? Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
Nope. The newer games have newer graphics. You couldn't switch them to older graphics if you tried—the Exile and Avernum engines use substantially different tile systems. —Alorael, who is impressed that your only computer can't handle Avernum. The engine is about ten years old, so the computer is probably older, right?

When A1 was still fairly new, I ran it just fine in Win98.
Fledgling Fyora belange
Does wine count?
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
Well, I believe they're Win16 applications, not Win32, if that means anything to you. They vaguely work in Basilisk II, and I think they work in Win3.1 under DosBox.
Well-Actually War Trall Niemand
I've never had any problems running Blades of Avernum with CrossOver, but I don't know about plain wine; I think I may have tried it at one point a while ago and had it fail. Ineffable Wingbolt Lord Safey
I haven't tried avernum but I have had some success getting geneforge to work on wine. Typically with minor glitches
