Old games won't install on Windows 7

Hi!

 

I recently bought a new computer and dug out my old Exile1-3+Blades CD from 1998. While I had no problems installing and playing them on WinXP, now they won't even install on my new system. Details:

 

- Windows 7, 64bit

- message shown when clicking on install.exe says that the install files are not compatible with this windows version. I shall check if an x86-(32 Bit)- or an x64-(64Bit)-Version is required and contact the publisher.

 

Any suggestions on how to get Exile 1-3 and Blades of Exile installed?

It should work in xp mode (basically a virtual machine with xp installed on it which you could use if you dont have xp mode)

I tried setting the compatibility mode of the installer (install.exe > Properties > Compatibility) to XP, Win98, Win95 but I still get this message. Is there another way to switch to XP mode?

For Blades of Exile, try installing this version instead. It's 32-bit, I assume, so it should install.

 

If you can't get the game to work under compatibility mode, you could try an emulator.

i think exiles are made for 16-bit os's so won't work on 64-bit os's, depending on your w7 version is there xp-mode available or not.

Blades worked like a charm on windows 2003 64-bit, without any compatibility settings. Good luck with the trilogy, though...

32-bit progs work on 64-bit os mostly.

The Google open source Blades of Exile is a 2009 vintage program. Hence it should work.

I am quite sure that the original Blades of Exile was 16 bit, ditto all existing versions of the Exile trilogy. I try to run them in the XN Resource Editor and I get the message that "... is not a valid Win32 application"

You can run them in a virtual machine using a program like VirtualBox or VMware.
